Birmingham VA Medical Center is seeking two (3) full time Advanced Medical Support Assistant to work at the Huntsville CBOC. The Advanced Medical Support Assistant works as a part of a team to support direct patient care. The selectee is aligned to an interdisciplinary team and serves as a working member of a health care team responsible for the coordination of the patient's health care needs. Duties are as follows:

Performs a variety of technical support duties that facilitate the work of physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and other members of the medical team who provide direct patient care.
Serve as a chief source of information and plays an independent role in coordinating and accomplishing the work of the unit.
Responsible for scheduling, cancelling, and rescheduling appointments, including interpreting and verifying provider orders in accordance with national scheduling guidelines.
Prepares orders for diagnostic tests (such as lab, x-ray, or EKG) which the patient will have at the beginning or end of the visit;
Reviews charts to determine eligibility for requested medication to allow for correct billing of pharmacy co-pay and administer pharmacy co-pay test when appropriate.
Responsible for identifying incomplete encounter information and communicating findings to providers to facilitate accurate workload credit and revenue collection.
Explains VA's mandate to collect insurance information to Veterans, their families, and other eligible patients.
Collects, scans, and updates health insurance information serving a major role in the revenue process.
Contacts professional staff to obtain information necessary to respond to requests when not readily available in the record and daily reviews of active/pending consults, Electronic Wait List, Recall list and Audio care communications for accuracy and disposition.
Performs receptionist duties, customer service and other duties assigned for the proper and timely treatment of patients and maintains appointment schedules for one or more outpatient clinics. He/she must assist with clinic access contingency plans by adjusting appointment times, location, or dates as well as shift patients to other healthcare providers as conflict with staffing and/or coverage occurs.
Work Schedule: Work Schedule: Primarily Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Work schedule may vary based on clinic need.

Basic Requirements:

Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A,paragraph 3g.).
Experience and Education.

(1) Experience. Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; or
(2) Education. One year above high school; or
(3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
English Language Proficiency. MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.

Must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower level (GS-05). Examples of Specialized Experience but not limited to: The Advanced MSA works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model (i.e., patient aligned care team, or other specialty care setting where the patient aligned care team model is used such as oncology, HIV, SCI, Military Sexual Trauma, etc.). The Advanced MSA coordinates with the patient care team to review the clinic utilization by using various reports (e.g., Clinic Utilization Statistical Summary), ensure that the clinic setup is closely monitored to effectively support the needs of the clinic, and make any necessary adjustments. They develop/maintain effective and efficient communication with the patient, interdisciplinary team, VA medical centers, and other agencies (e.g., assist with communications during the inpatient to outpatient discharge; communicate with non-VA medical facilities; facilitate/process secure messaging with the patient and team; notify patients of normal lab results; develop and manage a tracking system for follow up care such as consults, tests, etc.). Other assignments at this level include, but are not limited to: participating in team huddles and team meetings to manage and plan patient care; setting priorities and deadlines, adjusting the flow and sequencing of the work to meet team and patient needs; may work with the team to reinforce the plan of care and self-help solutions and entering appropriate information into the electronic record; monitoring pre-appointment requirements to assure readiness for patient visit/procedure (e.g., X-ray, lab work); managing electronic wait list to verify and validate accuracy and resolve issues.
