Job Description:

The Materials and Processes Engineering (MPE) organization is seeking highly motivated candidates for a Principal Engineering position within the Advanced Materials organization to lead research, development, validation, and implementation of special technology materials with a focus on high temperature exhaust system materials for state-of-the-art jet engine applications.

The preferred candidate will work closely with internal module center and engineering customers to define materials needs and requirements, and lead material development programs from initial proof of concept through production implementation. The candidate will also work with external government customers to establish and lead appropriate contract opportunities.

The candidate will become a technology leader with responsibilities that include generation of innovative material / process solutions to meet critical engine needs, effective planning and leadership of internal development programs and government contracts, mentoring of junior engineers/staff, and continuous development of standard work and best practices related to special technology materials development and implementation. The preferred candidate will work as part of a cohesive and dedicated team of engineers and technicians responsible for the development of the referenced materials.

Basic Qualifications:

  • B. S. in Materials Science (or related field of study).

  • 8+ years relevant experience (5+ years with an advanced degree) in areas such as ceramics, ceramic matrix composites, materials development, the identification/implementation of novel process and manufacturing solutions associated with ceramic materials, and mechanical and electromagnetic property testing.

  • Candidate must hold or be eligible for a US DOD Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An Advanced Degree in Materials Science or related field of study a plus

  • Additional experience in high temperature coatings is desirable

  • Knowledge of oxide-based advanced ceramics and/or composites

  • Interest in developing, marketing, and securing funding for innovative R&D efforts

  • Experience in managing project schedule and budget

The Materials & Processes Engineering (MPE) department is responsible for developing and delivering advanced materials technologies and manufacturing solutions to enable system-level enhancements for both Military and Commercial jet engines. The Materials Characterization Discipline is seeking an Engineer to work within our X-ray Computed Tomography (xCT) sub-specialty in a dynamic environment working on complex problems. As xCT continues to become an indispensable tool guiding Engineering decision-making within P&W, we need to grow our team to meet the demand. The Engineer will work within inter-disciplinary teams, including new Materials Development, Failure Analysis, Design/Structures, Quality, and Manufacturing, to define xCT scanning and analysis approaches to directly impact in new materials technology development programs, determine root cause for Engine Safety and Field Investigations, and provide critical engineering data for Manufacturing/Quality issue resolution. This individual will be responsible for advancing measurement technologies by developing novel approach to scan parts and analyze large 3D data sets. He/she will work in a collaborative team of other Engineers and Technicians focused on growing the xCT technology and its application. Responsibilities include: Collaborate directly with Engineering customers to define work scope and data requirements for the problem at-hand Utilize advanced X-ray characterization techniques, notably xCT, to deliver needed customer data, such as cooling hole morphology, crack propagation impacting lifing, and other quantifiable metrics impacting part performance Create and implement strategies, procedures, and workflows to promote efficiency and data quality, including in the areas of automation and batch processing Identify, investigate, and develop external partnerships with national laboratories, and universities, to utilize newest technology Train engineers and technicians on advanced characterization techniques Work in a fast-paced environment where multiple concurrent projects is typical Basic Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in relevant field with heavy emphasis in materials characterization techniques (Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, etc.) * 5 + years of experience in at least one of the following X-ray characterization techniques: X-ray computed tomography, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, Laue diffraction or 3+ years with an advanced degree. * Fundamental knowledge of X-ray physics (absorption, scattering, fluorescence, etc.) Desired Qualifications: * PhD in relevant field with heavy emphasis in materials characterization techniques (Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, etc.) * Leadership in development and implementation of advanced characterization techniques * Coding experience for image analysis and data quantification (Matlab and/or Python preferred) * Image analysis experience, particularly with software such as Volume Graphics, Avizo, and Dragonfly * Experience working in large collaborative teams to solve technically difficult problems * Proficient at presenting technical data to both technical and non-technical audiences * Strong oral and written communication skills What is my role type?
