Southern Research is seeking a creative, self-motivated individual to fill a need for an Advanced Manufacturing Research Group Manager. This senior-level leadership position will lead the technical strategy and grow the market segment in the Advanced Manufacturing Sector that includes additive manufacturing technologies, materials, processes, automation, and in situ nondestructive monitoring processes.

The Advanced Manufacturing Group Manager will utilize existing research facilities, to establish new laboratory capabilities, build a comprehensive research program and technical team to support activities, and engage with industry, universities, and government laboratory communities to build collaborative programs. The successful candidate will also drive innovation, research, development, and demonstration of solutions while leading a cross-functional group to engage with external vendors and networks.

Areas of Responsibilities:

  • Subject matter expert in additive manufacturing technologies, processes, and materials

  • New business development centered on development and characterization of additive manufactured materials, processes, and in situ monitoring processes

  • Lead competitive proposal writing and partnering activities in support of additive manufacturing technologies

  • Publish technical articles/journals related to advanced additive manufacturing technologies

  • Present technical work at reputable conferences and workshops throughout North America and abroad

  • Primary Customer Interface

  • Program Development and Management

  • Proposal Writing

  • Project Management

  • Laboratory Design and Management

  • Test Design

  • Organizing, Leading, and Engaging Cross-Functional Team(s) or Engineers

Experience, Education and

  • MS or PhD in Mechanical, Materials, Metallurgical, or Aerospace Engineering or a related field required.

  • Minimum 10 years' experience related to Materials Characterization and Evaluation and/or Materials Processing focused on advanced/additive manufacturing required.

  • Strong background in additive manufacturing processes, materials characterization techniques, non-destructive evaluation, and design of structures and systems using additively manufactured materials is preferred.

  • Project leadership and project management experience preferred, with a history of successful program management.

  • Strong understanding in materials/process modeling preferred

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Must be creative, self-motivated, and efficient.

  • Some travel required.

  • Must be a US Citizen with ability to obtain a US Secret Clearance.
