Pay Range
$132,810 - $170,556 Annually for the SES.2 level
$159,330 - $204,636 Annually for the SES.3 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have an opening for a Materials Engineer in the Advanced Coatings and Vacuum Process Group. You will support R&D activities in synthesis and characterization of thin film materials, advanced materials, for various applications. You will have a meaningful role in developing solutions to challenging technical problems associated with thin film synthesis, primarily using physical vapor deposition (PVD), for graded, multilayered, optical coatings. Other technical areas include material compatibility, deposition system design and experimental development. This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering Directorate.
This position will be filled at either level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
In this role you will
Provide material engineering support to develop processes and techniques for high performance and precision coating requests for experimental components.
Provide creative solutions to moderately complex technical problems involving vacuum deposition systems, material compatibility and characterization for customers by conducting applied research.
Disseminate results, including methods developed, and keep records used on deposition process parameters and chamber parameters.
Work with customers to establish coating requirements, develop new coating capabilities, on a variety of processing equipment.
Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technicians to accomplish coating and deposition goals.
Organize, analyze, and present data from experiments and development activities on welding and other joining tasks.
Participate and provide recommendations for processing equipment and upgrades.
Perform other duties as assigned.
In addition, at the SES.3 Level
Facilitate project and program growth from external and internal funding sources.
Provide leadership in advancing the state-of-art in technologies related to one or more of advanced materials and processing, advanced coatings.
Champion, lead and develop creative solutions that involve groundbreaking principles, theories, and concepts.
Qualifications
Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
Masters degree in Material Science and Engineering, Metallurgy, Optical/Mechanical/Chemical Engineering, Physics or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Comprehensive knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas: advanced materials, thin film coatings, optical coatings, characterization of thin film materials, and various physical vapor deposition techniques.
Experience giving technical presentations and participating in reviews, identifying technical needs, developing practical approaches, and delivering working solutions for program customers.
Proficient communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present and explain technical information.
Additional Qualifications at the SES.3 level
Significant experience in a materials science development environment in material synthesis, vacuum technology and expertise in sputtering and electron beam evaporation, and ion deposition sources.
Demonstrated ability to manage small projects and collaborate across diverse technical fields.
Advanced written and verbal communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and advise senior management.
