This role bridges the technical expertise of data engineers and data scientists with the operational expertise within Nationwide. This leadership role ensures that deep insights generated through sophisticated analytics translate into impact at scale in the organization. The position draws on domain knowledge to help business leaders identify and prioritize their business problems, based on which will create the highest value when solved, and then leverage working knowledge of advanced analytics (e.g., artificial intelligence, machine learning, etc.) to convey these business goals to the data science professionals who will create the models and solutions.
Reporting Relationships: This role will report and/or have matrix reports to business operation leaders, enterprise analytics office and/or VP, Analytics and Pricing Development.
Will have 3 or more direct reports. Team will be comprised of data scientists and project managers.
Core Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for aligning the strategy to develop new modeling and data analytic enhancements, which support new and existing segmentation which drive/inform pricing, sales & distribution, underwriting and/or claims practices. This includes oversight for the actuarial/statistical methodologies, machine learning and artificial intelligence as a part of advanced analytics efforts, and ensuring those analytical efforts are well-defined and executed.
Partner and influence business leadership to design solutions and products to meet customer needs while at the same time assessing the risk adjusted return on capital and meet regulatory constraints.
Provide oversight and direction of evaluation, updating, and maintenance of models and assumptions as experience emerges. Models could cover a range of applications in product, pricing, underwriting, sales, marketing, claims or other areas.
Could include capital models and development of approach to implementing targeted return framework for a given product. As a part of this, advise and inform business, finance and risk management leadership of recommended product or process changes to improve model effectiveness and drive profitable growth.
Influence, educate and motivate a cross functional team to deliver analytics results; team may be virtual or direct reports. At any given time, expectation is the role will be responsible for developing 2-5 complex analytics models that can result in significant business process changes as an outcome of implementation.
Will be accountable for some ongoing oversight of models once developed. Role also requires the ability to communicate and influence to gain top-down support as well as business and risk management leadership approval for specific recommendations and investments.

Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: Degree in a relevant field preferred (e.g. Data Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, etc.) plus ideally an advanced degree.
Highly prefer 10 years of experience working in an analytics-centric business environment.
An excellent ability to identify sources of value from advanced analytics to define paths and realizing value. Deep understanding of fundamental machine-learning principles. Familiar with machine-learning technologies and tools.
A minimum 5 years of people leadership background is required. Ideal candidate possesses strong leadership competencies including verbal and written communication, team collaboration, influencing others, coaching and development, and building organizational talent.
Critical thinking, results orientation, and advisory skills are also critical. This leader often must solve complex business problems directly or provide technical advice to assist others who are responsible. He/she must be able to think on his/her feet, often providing guidance in the absence of complete information.
Experience with external relationships, such as industry or professional groups, consultants, or other third parties through which the company works is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate is someone whom is comfortable and capable representing the organization equally with internal and external stakeholders.
