General Overview of the Position Benefits Supplemental Questions
The dates of this position will primarily include Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6PM between April 30 and August 23. Softball games run Monday through Thursday nights, and the Recreation Department is flexible with the scheduling for this position.
Under the supervision of the Recreation Program Specialist, the Adult Softball Umpire is responsible for rules enforcement and the supervision of participants in the program. The Softball Umpire will make appropriate judgment calls during games and act as a score keeper to report back to the Recreation Program Supervisor.
Examples of Essential Duties:
Professionally represent the New Berlin Park and Recreation Department.
Enforce rules and assist in rules clarification.
Ensures a safe playing environment for participants.
Observes, enforces and explains all game rules and regulations.
Reports problems or needs to management.
Report to work at least 5 minutes prior to game and stay until field is clear.
Attend all in-service training programs and be aware of all facility procedures.
Communicate equipment and/or supply needs with management.
All other duties as may be assigned.
Possess an interest in working with peers in a competitive setting.
Must have knowledge and ability to enforce the rules of Softball as designated.
Ability to keep simple score of game.
Manage a time clock during a game.
Possess a broad knowledge of Softball.
Previous umpiring, instructing, coaching and/or competitive playing preferred.
Frequently required to stand, squat, stoop, and run for extended periods of time.
Ability to communicate effectively, courteously and tactfully with participants, staff, city officials and the public.
Ability to present a positive image of the department and the City.
