ADULT SCHOOL ESL TEACHER

DESCRIPTION

ESL Teachers provide English instruction to classes or individual students. ESL teachers may require extra training to learn the special needs of adult learners.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

  • Instructs students by lecturing, demonstrating, and using audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations.

  • Prepares course objectives and outline for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements of state, district and school.

  • Keeps attendance records.

  • Maintains discipline in classroom.

  • Document adult learner progress, including CASAS testing, attendance, and program impact data. Additional accountability requirements as assigned.

  • Participates in fauclty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.

  • May perform related duties such as sponsoring one or more activities or student orgnaizations, serving on school and/or district committees, and working with team of colleagues reponsible for improving instruction and school climate.

  • Develop a curriculum that takes an overall approach to English study or they may focus on a specific aspect of language use, such as life skills, literacy, or vocational and workplace English.

  • Instruct non-English-speaking adults to read, listen, write and speak in English.

  • Combining basic studies with real-life interactions involving language use in different situations, such as shopping, schooling, job hunting, or working with English-speaking coworkers.

  • Knowledge of their students' culture and recognize differences that may affect a student's ability to acclimate to an English-speaking environment.

  • Must be able to adapt instructional techniques and find creative ways to interpret information to meet the students' diverse needs.

  • Plan relevant lessons and assign meaningful homework.

  • Knows how to use a variety of computer software tools.

  • Other duties may be assigned

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of Microsoft computer applications, including Microsoft Word.

  • Ability to create an atmosphere in the classroom where students are encouraged to develop their full potential

  • Ability to communicate with students in a warm, caring, considerate manner, with the ability to find a balance between professional distance and concern for individuals

  • Abiltiy to establish and maintain a cooperative rapport with other teachers, counselors, classified staff and administration

  • Ability to organize classroom activities, maintain classroom order

  • Ability to keep records and meet dealines in grade reporting, attendance reporting, etc.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

The following teaching credentials authorizes teaching ESL:

  • Full-Time Adult Credential
  • English As A Second Language
  • Multiple or single Subject Teaching Credential with Egnlish Learner Authorization or CLAD Emphasis

  • Multiple or single subject Teaching Credential with a bilingual authorization or BCLAD Emphasis

  • Elementary and Secondary Basic Skills Adult Credential with the English Learner (EL) Authorization and Cross-cultural, Language, and Academic Development (CLAD) Certificate

Pass the CBEST

A bachelor's degree or higher completed at a regionally-accredited college or university to include a degree major, certificate, or completion of 20 semester units or 10 upper division semester units in one or any combination of the following:

  • Teaching English As A Second Language (TESL)

  • Teaching English To Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

  • Language Other Than English

  • Linguistics

  • Bilingual/Bicultural Studies

  • Second Language Acquisition
