Provide individualized academic, college, and career guidance and planning to students in the Academic Studies Department for Adult Basic Education (ABE), Adult Secondary Education (ASE), General Education Development (GED), English as a Second Language (ESL), and high school concurrent (HSC) instructional programs; assist students in understanding their choices for post-secondary education and career training; maintaining liaisons with community leaders and business; provide information and/or direction to students, parents, teachers, and administrators about career and educational services available to eligible students; develop and monitor student and program outcome data and reports; and promote programs with students, staff, parents, and the community.

Duties and Responsibilities

General Duties:

  • Enroll and program new students.

  • Assist adult students with college, career, and post-secondary transitions.

  • Analyze and implement Individual Student Education and/or Action Plans (IEPs/IAPs).

  • Check, update, and evaluate promotion/graduation records.

  • Schedule students into classes and make changes as needed.

  • Provided targeted guidance to students and parents in the areas of academic, career technical education, and socio-emotional development.

  • Refer students with special needs for testing, assessment, special classes, or other related services.

  • Interpret and assist in the administration of tests such as the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS), district or state examinations, aptitude, or interest tests.

  • Monitor student performance with the areas of academics, attendance, and discipline.

  • Provide students with information such as university, college, career technical education, entrance exams, high school and college proficiency tests, career choice options, course requirements, elective choices, dual-enrollment courses, military opportunities, financial aid, scholarships, adult education, integrated education and training, and other educational options.

  • Conduct conferences with students, parents, and teachers.

  • Communicate and maintain record of contacts with students, parents, teachers, probation officers, police, doctors, counseling agencies, and others.

  • Counsel students, parents, and teachers regarding alternative education programs, conflict resolution, fight prevention, family relationships, interpersonal relationships, personal and/or emotional problems, attendance, substance abuse, conflict in the classroom, learning challenges, child abuse, suicide, and other social challenges.

  • Recommend school and community resources to parents and students.

  • Maintain counselor logs of teacher conferences or parent contacts.

  • Plan and conduct staff development meetings in consultation with the principal and other instructional staff.

  • Conduct parent/student orientations.

  • Supervise students before and after school, assemblies, break periods, fire and disaster drills, promotion, and rehearsals for promotion.

  • Attend conferences and meetings to gain and disseminate information to appropriate teachers and to the Principal of the Adult Education Program.

  • Prepare for, conduct, and/or attend meetings such as staff, district, student, in-service trainings.

  • Work closely with high school counselors and parents of concurrent high school students in the areas of student attendance, progress reports, and scholastic grades.

  • Assist principal as needed in the orientation and training of teachers and instructional aides.

  • Perform other duties as appropriate and as may be assigned.

Other Required Responsibilities

  • Report suspected child abuse.

  • Supervise student activities as needed.

  • Assist with planning and conducting graduation activities.

  • Provide in-service to students, teachers, and staff concerning college and career opportunities.

  • Provide class coverage as needed.

  • Assist teachers with classroom discipline as requested.

  • Prepare for and/or attend faculty, student success team, IEP/IAP, and staff development meetings.

  • Attend Open House events.

  • Prepare job performance evaluation reports.

  • Write publicity for the Adult School Academic Program as needed.

  • Promote the Adult School and its programs throughout the District and community.

  • Serve on and attend the Adult School Advisory and Leadership Team Committees and appropriate BUSD Guidance Council(s).

  • Promotion and graduation requirements.

  • College entrance requirements.

  • Linked learning and career pathways and industry sectors.

  • School district policies, procedures, rules, and regulations appropriate to counselor position such as grading, eligibility, and discipline.

  • Regulations/procedures for special placement of students.

  • Classroom rules and regulations.

  • Curricular content and guidelines for placement and ongoing assessment of students.

  • State and District curriculum.

  • Testing and assessment tools and strategies.

  • Computerized management information system (MIS) databases/programs.

  • Techniques and strategies for crisis intervention.

  • Tests and measurement.

  • Comprehensive education system.

  • Physical, intellectual, social, and emotional characteristics of adult and concurrent high school students.

  • Human growth, development, and behavior.

Ability to:

  • Communicate and work effectively with staff, students, parents, community members, other counselors, and administrators.

  • Counsel individuals and groups with warmth, dignity, sensitivity, and understanding.

  • Organize and monitor programs effectively.

  • Diagnose and provide effective solutions to problems.

  • Interpret test results.

  • Practice good listening skills.

  • Prioritize time and tasks.

  • Plan and coordinate staff development in consultation with the principal.

  • Facilitate change processes as required and incorporate new counseling methods, materials, and techniques.

  • Acquire knowledge and skill in using technology tools to enhance productivity.

  • Work closely with and coordinate with assistants and aides in performing appropriate responsibilities and duties.

  • Assist meeting individual and group needs of students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a valid California Credential appropriate to the assignment(s) - Pupil Personnel Services: School Counseling. (Clear, Preliminary or Intern)

  • Upper division or graduate work.

  • Secondary and/or post-secondary education teaching or related experience.
