Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company is seeking an experienced Primary Casualty Manager with extensive auto experience to help lead our entry into admitted casualty. At least 70% of the work will be internal facing, the role will require 20% travel and the position will be based in Boston.
The Primary Casualty Manager will be responsible for operationalizing a new underwriting platform. The initial focus of writing will be middle market primary GL and Auto with supported Umbrella. During the first phase of opening the platform, the candidate will assist in establishing guidelines and procedures for all aspects of the underwriting process from submission through binding and billing. In as much as this is a start-up business, candidates should expect to function in detail at all levels of the operation for a significant time.
After the initial phase, the candidate will work with field underwriters to manage the business and provide strategic vision for future profitable growth. A preferred candidate must have strong collaborative skills. Establishing successful collaboration between many functional areas is a requirement. Candidates will assist in the building out and training of field underwriting staff.
The candidate should be comfortable working technically with actuaries and with the regulatory requirements of writing admitted auto business. Good data management skills are required.
In addition, necessary character, relationship building and negotiating skills to help lead a profitable book of business are of the upmost importance. Successful candidates will be focused on a positive customer experience, while maintaining underwriting discipline.
Additional Required Skills and Experience Include:
10+ years of primary auto underwriting, including 5+ year managing a book of primary auto business
Experience underwriting OL&T general casualty, products, and construction business preferred
Ability to develop broker and customer relationships in conjunction with field staff
5+ years of experience with customer meetings
Strong technical underwriting skill set
Ability to work in a fast paced, customer focused, team environment
BS/BA degree or equivalent experience
