Potomac State College, part of the West Virginia University system of campuses, is seeking applications for an Admissions Counselor. Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Enrollment Services, the incumbent will plan and implement a student recruitment program designed to increase enrollment and enhance recruitment strategies. Primary territory for this position will include northern Virginia, suburban Maryland and Washington, DC and secondary markets as assigned.

In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:

  • Be knowledgeable about the WVU Potomac State College programs, features, facilities, scholarships and financial aid opportunities. Be able to articulate same in a professional consistent manner.

  • Work with supervisor to develop territorial and programmatic recruitment goals and develop multi-channel communication strategies to achieve these goals. Evaluate the effectiveness of various approaches utilized.

  • Counsel students on the benefits of higher education and characteristics of academic programs offered by WVU Potomac State College (PSC). Operates a motor vehicle to travel to assigned areas to counsel students on the issues of academic programs, admissions requirements, housing, financial aid and student life.

  • Interpret admission requirements and procedures outlined in PSC's catalog to students, teachers, counselors and others as required. Assist prospective students and families in understanding financial aid regulations and requirements.

  • Aggressively follow-up with students, parents and high school counselors from initial contact through enrollment to assure students have every opportunity to enroll.

  • Coordinate individual and group visits to campus to promote features and benefits of PSC to future students. Coordinate and participate in special programs to increase recruitment within assigned territory. These may include, but are not limited to, receptions, counselor meetings, and open house events.

  • Manage written, electronic, and tele-counseling outreach efforts with prospective students in recruitment territory. Respond to a variety of email, phone, social media, and written communications from prospective and admitted students.

  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with high school guidance counselors. Coordinate communication to high school guidance counselors.

  • Coordinate, participate, and/or manage special programs as assigned to increase recruitment within assigned territory. These may include, but are not limited to, receptions, counselor meetings, and open house events.

  • Coordinate arrangements for prospective students to visit the campus and conduct campus tours.

  • Execute special recruiting projects, as needed.

  • Assist with on-campus recruiting events, including but not limited to open houses, PSC Orientation events, and Student Services Days.

  • Assist with office duties, including data entry of inquiry cards, processing of applications, and preparation of mailings.

  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor to insure the efficient operation of the Enrollment Services functions.

  • Bachelor's degree is required. Job requires a thorough knowledge of a professional discipline as would be acquired through a relevant baccalaureate education program.

  • Six (6) months previously related and progressively responsible experience in sales, marketing or public relations. (This experience may be gained in the private sector and/or through internships, and/or participation in student organizations at Potomac State or another comparable institution of higher education.)

  • Ability to relate to the concerns of prospective students and parents and the ability to counsel them on those concerns.

  • Excellent oral and written communications are required in order to advise and counsel students, parents and high school counselors regarding Potomac State College's admissions requirements and to communicate attributes of programs and services offered.

  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop constructive relationships with prospective students and their families as well as high school counselors, teachers and principals.

  • Must exhibit professional behavior and image at all times to best represent the institution to our constituents.

  • Must exhibit tact and discretion; ability to organize; ability to work long hours and travel extensively while staying fresh and positive; persuasive communication skills.

  • Must have self-motivation; creativity, positive energetic attitude and the flexibility to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to rapidly learn admission requirements, housing, and financial aid requirements and regulations.

  • Ability to operate motor vehicle.

The main purpose of this position is to support the WVU Potomac State College (PSC) campus community by establishing and maintaining a safe atmosphere for the faculty, staff, students, and visitors at PSC by providing police and security services. In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will: * Patrol all PSC campus areas, both on foot and in patrol vehicle to observe persons and property within assigned jurisdiction in efforts of reducing and preventing criminal activities. Check and/or secure all buildings located on the PSC campus, staying alert for situations of deficiencies that make the college campus vulnerable to crime. Correct and/or report noted deficiencies. Assist the college community and general public on ways to make themselves more secure from criminal activities. * Patrol designated campus areas during special events such as sporting events, club-sponsored activities, and other similar gatherings that draw large crowds. Direct traffic and provide crowd control for such events. * Enforce all State and College laws, rules, regulations. Enforce all campus traffic and parking regulations. Make arrests in accordance with departmental arrest policies. Recognize and apprehend wanted persons, wanted automobiles, and stolen property. * Investigate criminal complaints and both traffic and non-traffic accidents in conjunction with the investigative unit by collecting and preserving evidence, interviewing witnesses and interrogating suspects, searching records, and surveillance activities. * Watch for fires, fire hazards, safety hazards, and other dangerous situations. Take appropriate action when water leak, chemical spill, or other related hazardous condition is detected. * Assist the general campus community and public by answering inquiries, providing directions, and other similar service activities. * Testify in court or college hearings to knowledge of or actions taken in regard to matters of interest to courts or PSC. * Administer first aid to injured or sick persons and provide or arrange for necessary transportation. Pay Grade: 16 * Associates Degree required in Criminal Justice or related field. * Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. * Must qualify for, attend, and complete WV Basic Law Enforcement Academy within one year. The Academy requires the applicant to pass a physical examination. * Preference will be given to individuals who have completed WV Basic Law Enforcement Academy. * 0-6 months directly related experience (Preference may be given to candidates with greater amounts of directly related experience) of certified law enforcement officer or military law enforcement. Preference given to prior certified training or completion of an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field may be substituted for experience required. * Ability to read and write in English and perform basic mathematical calculations as would be required in the completion of technical reports and professional police operations. * Ability to communicate with individuals at all levels within the organization and the general public in a clear and professional manner. * Current knowledge of WV State Laws relating to public safety and the ability to rapidly learn College and Department of Public Safety policies and procedures. * Ability to accurately operate a firearm. (preference given to prior experience). * Ability to drive defensively (preference given to prior experience). * Must acquire and maintain a CPR certification (preference given to prior experience). * Knowledge of and ability to perform defensive tactics to protect self and others (preference given to prior experience). * Ability to react quickly in emergency situations (preference given to prior experience). * Ability to subdue individuals under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs (preference given to prior experience). * Physical capability to perform duties of position. * Current knowledge of police practices and philosophies.
