Admissions and Counseling

  • Informs and advises all prospective students and their families on a variety of issues ranging from CSU admissions eligibility, career and major choices, and admissions possibilities.

  • Provide comprehensive advising to all prospective students and knowledgeable about all of the complexities of international and non-resident educational systems, transcripts, checklist and course equivalencies.

  • Works with prospective students and high school and community college counselors in the navigation and use of ASSIST (a computerized student-transfer information system that is the official repository of articulation for California's colleges and universities) and TES (repository for campus articulation agreements with non-California and California 4- year colleges/universities).

  • Provides the most accurate and up-to-date information available about student transfer, CalStateApply, and online resources designed to help students and their families learn about the CSU system, select a CSU campus to attend, and apply for admission.

  • Evaluates transcripts to determine admissibility and works with the PeopleSoft student information system and OnBase.

  • Provides useful information regarding potentially sensitive issues and works to achieve a satisfactory result for prospective students and on and off-campus constituencies.

  • Refers prospective students, off-site school personnel, community contacts to the appropriate office when information requests are beyond the scope of the Admissions Counselor.

  • Provides advisement on admissions procedures/policies and entrance requirements, CPP majors and academic programs, financial assistance, housing, student life, athletic programs and career opportunities.

  • Maintains a strong working knowledge of requirements and policies that pertain to CSU admissions, impaction, transfer articulation, language proficiency, residency and residency reclassification.

  • Conducts admission workshops for admitted students and campus and community partners.

Frontline Service Oversight

  • Serves as the initial point of contact in the Office of Admissions for students and families in the admissions and enrollment process.

  • Assists with receiving and processing admissions documents, including transcripts, test scores, residency documents, fee waivers, etc.

  • Maintains a broad understanding of admission, matriculation, mandatory orientation, campus housing, and enrollment practices.

Residency Support

  • Assists with determining residency for new and continuing students.

  • Provides departmental training and updates existing and new documentation on determining applicant residency.

  • Review residency questions and policy and process questionnaires in accordance with CSU Residency policies and procedures.

  • Ensures the Director of Admissions and Coordinator of Admissions are kept abreast of all residency requirements and changes, ensuring the incoming data and Maintenance Packs do not affect residency processing.

Office of Admissions

  • Participates in all Office of Admissions, Enrollment Management & Services, and divisional staff development and staff meetings, and attends all major staff events to promote the University.

  • Conducts testing of admission systems and modifications (e.g. Cal State Apply application, Slate information/communication system, etc.)

  • Prepares and utilizes enrollment reports detailing application, admit and enrollment trends, and prospective student inquiry analysis to determine yield strategies.

  • Performs administrative and programmatic duties as assigned.

  • Works extended hours, weekends, and evenings in support of Office of Admissions programs and services.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.

  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi‑aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.

  • Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.

  • A master's degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledgeable in admission policy from large systems/colleges; CSU experience is highly preferred.

  • Must have the ability to present and articulate complex requirements and policies concerning admissions; be able to respond to in-person, telephone and electronic inquiries.

The CSU Salary Schedule is located on the following site: https://www.calstate.edu/csu-system/careers/compensation/Pages/salary-schedule-documents.aspx. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is minimum $4,841 and maximum $6,884 per month.
