Job Duties

SIGN-ON BONUS is up to $5,000 (with a one-year commitment) to applicants new to the state or who have not served any DBHDS facilities in the past year.

Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents seeks a full-time, experienced Registered Nurse Manager to work as an Administrator on Duty (AOD) - Formerly a Shift Supervisor time position. This position required supervisory coverage of the Nursing Department, other patient care areas, and the hospital in general after office hours, i.e. night shifts and on the weekends.

Administrators on Duty are required to work 3rd shift, (2) 12-hour shifts and (2) 8-hour shifts or (5) 8-hour shifts per week and every other weekend and holidays.

What AOD Do:

  • Required to develop and implement staffing plans for shifts based on patient acuity, patient census, and available staff.

  • AOD serves as a resource to staff for solving clinical problems and assists staff in efficiently utilizing staffing resources to meet patient care requirements.

  • Report and provide documentation and communication of incidents on the shift to the appropriate manager and director.

  • Respond to emergencies (Behavioral and Medical) and assist as necessary.

  • Act as a resource, interpret, and ensure adherence to Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents and nursing policies and Procedures.

  • AOD will be responsible for evaluate and supervise nursing staff and document staff performances, including verbal and written counselling.

  • Work as a consultant to charge nurses on performance issues.

  • Serves as a role model in developing and hospitality for newly hired staff and promoting civility among coworkers.

  • Coordinates services on assigned shifts.

  • Communicates clinical and administrative issues to the charge nurse and/or unit managers and the Chief Nursing Executive.

Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents is the only facility providing mental health care to children and adolescents in Virginia under the Department of Behavioral Health and Development Services umbrella. The Center offers a modern, safe environment with four 12-bed living units and adequate education and recreational space on a single-story floor plan.

The Center is affiliated with the University of Virginia Department of Psychiatric Medicine. It provides a training ground for professionals from other colleges and universities in nursing, social work, psychology, and activities therapy.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current licensure (Compact License) or eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program is required.

  • Successful applicants must have professional nursing experience.

  • Supervisory experience is required for this position.

  • Strong communication and computer skills need to be demonstrated in a professional career.

  • Effective verbal and written communication.

  • Knowledge of illness and treatment modalities.

  • Ability to participate in an interdisciplinary team.

Additional Considerations

A bachelor's degree in nursing, prior clinical experience in psychiatric nursing or acute care, and bilingualism in Spanish are preferred.
