POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Assistant Principal
FACILITY: Hardin Middle School
REPORTS TO: Principal, Superintendent
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The person in this position helps monitor the progress of pupils, and reports such progress to parents. The Assistant Principal assumes responsibility for ensuring proper attendance procedures and follow-up activities are on-going for students.
Strives to create a school climate that is positive and productive for students, staff and the community. Interacts with parent, student, and staff concerns in a sensitive, timely manner. Serves as a contact with police, probationary officers, and other agencies that deal with attendance and behavioral concerns.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervision with Faculty/Staff
Supervision with students
Communication and public relations with parents, business leaders and community members. Listen and respond to parent concerns with sensitivity.
Curriculum/Instruction
Facilities
Positive Behavior Interventions and Support:
Facilitate PBIS Leadership Team meetings, events, and staff training
Communicate action plan, procedures, and school-wide data with Principal, teachers, parents, and students.
Maintain discipline records and analyze data to establish PBIS school-wide initiatives
Provide individual and/or entire staff training in effective classroom management strategies
Plan and implement positive student reinforcement activities
School-wide discipline:
Collaboratively work with Principal, staff and parents to enforce the school discipline policy and correct negative student behavior
School-wide attendance monitoring:
Work closely with the school secretary to identify any student with an attendance problem (weekly)
Make sure parents are well informed when their student has missed 4, 7, 10, and 11 days of class in a semester
Communicate attendance concerns with parents via personal meetings, phone calls, and mailing.
Follow the student handbook on discipline, dealing with attendance and tardies
Assist Principal in…
Work closely with the staff and secretary to coordinate the need for substitutes
Train the substitutes wanting to work in the Middle School
Arrange substitute work schedules as necessary
The completion of state and district required documents and reports
The development of school budget, schedules, handbooks, policies
Keep abreast of educational change that is pertinent to assigned area of responsibility
Supervise and provide necessary training to paraprofessionals
Share supervisory duties with the other members of the Middle School Administrative team at all extra-curricular activities
Serve on committees as assigned
When the Principal is absent from the building, the Assistant Principal will handle the daily tasks of the Principal

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION:
Valid Montana Teacher Certification with proper endorsement
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and school community
Ability to be flexible in scheduling and planning
Ability to effectively use technology in the instructional/learning process
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
Ability to handle stressful situations
Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student matters
Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and School Board policies

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, occasionally walk and stand. The employee must be able to lift and / or move up to 50 pounds.
