Description:

The University of Illinois Chicago - College of Dentistry (UIC COD) Office of Clinical Affairs is seeking a qualified candidate for a full-time Staff Nurse III (Nurse Manager) to oversee the staff nurses that support the Pediatric Dentistry and Oral Surgery Outpatient Care Center in the College of Dentistry.

The Department of Pediatric Dentistry and the Department of Oral Surgery at the UIC College of Dentistry are the largest providers of pediatric dental and Oral Surgery care in Illinois. The Pediatric Dentistry & Oral Surgery Outpatient Care Center serve healthy children at low risk of complications who need oral health care under general anesthesia.

The Administrative Nurse III (ANIII) is a Registered Professional Nurse who is responsible for developing and supervising of nursing services of one or more nursing units in the out-patient care center utilizing the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model as the framework. The ANIII manages direct patient care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence-based Practice and Magnet's Five Models of Care into clinical practice. The ANIII manages quality patient care and facilitates achievement of unit and organizational goals and is responsible for accreditation process of the Pediatric and Oral Surgery Outpatient Care Center.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Education/Research

  • Facilitates the planning, presenting and evaluating of learning/educational experiences for staff and students Serves as resource to other nursing staff and students

  • In collaboration with Staff Nurse II directs unit-based quality initiatives and provides feedback and education to staff

  • Encourages and supports nursing and multidisciplinary research efforts conducted on the unit and in the Medical Center

  • Responsible for continued professional growth/development by identification of learning needs and initiates strategies to meet such needs

Organizational

  • Adheres to and enforce the Code of Conduct.

  • Treats patients/families, staff, students and visitors with respect and dignity. Adheres to and enforces Nursing's time, overtime and attendance policies.

  • Completes electronic learning modules and related programs as assigned by Medical Center Learning by established date

  • Complies with University Health Services TB and fit-testing requirements

  • Initiates resolution of patient care problems utilizing established communication channels/chain of command

  • Resolves recurring clinical practice and/or related unit problems and participates in problem solving and resolution utilizing established communication channels/chain of command

Perioperative Services

  • Provides Perioperative nursing care in the suite.

  • Provides guidance and support to unit leadership in planning and execution of strategic goals.

  • Responsible for perioperative services efficiency including but not limited to first case on time starts, turnover times, operating room utilization, reduction of surgical case cancellation rates.

  • Monitors and assists with operating room set up and turnovers.

  • The ANIII is directly responsible for management and 24/7 accountability of assigned surgical service lines, including but limited to staff assignments, built/maintenance of service line surgeon specific preference cards.

  • Responsible for budgetary oversight of assigned service lines.

  • In charge of hiring and management of direct reports.

  • Manages staff employee files, payroll, and attendance.

  • Responsible for direct reports competencies and timely completion of staff performance reviews.

  • Manages staff and unit regulatory compliance.

  • Assists in development, interpretation, implementation, maintenance, evaluation of perioperative surgical policies and procedures.

  • Manages staff scheduling, staffing plans, staff assignments and on-call coverage.

  • Collaborates with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and leadership.

  • Responsible for requesting, introduction and management of surgical equipment trials.

  • Accountable for care coordination. Promotes continuity of safe care and throughput.

  • Promotes and monitors positive patient experience. Investigates complaints, provides service recovery, and mitigates issues.

  • Identifies gaps and opportunities. Develops action plans for process improvement.

  • Maintains safe environment of care. Performs environmental rounds. Identifies facility needs, places requests, and tracks to ensure completion.

  • Collaborates with EVS. Tracks scheduled maintenance.

  • Evaluates information technology needs. Identifies IT needs, places requests, and tracks to ensure completion.

  • Keeps calendar up to date. Prepares for and attends meetings as needed.

  • Actively reviews, responds to, and tracks patients safety reports.

  • Manages and ensures surgeon(s) special equipment and products requests needs have been met.

  • In collaboration with Materials Management staff the ANIII is responsible for maintaining appropriate supplies for their assigned service lines.

  • Actively participate in departmental and organizational task force and committees as assigned by the department's director.

  • Collaborates with staff and leadership to ensure departmental escalation is used, event report is completed.

Works proactively.

  • Develops and actively participates in quality, safety, and efficiency action plans.

  • Remains visible to staff, surgeons, and anesthesiologists by performing 3 - 4 times per shift purposeful rounding.

  • Develops and manages departmental vendors visit and support.

  • Proactively reviews the surgical schedule to anticipate special equipment and supplies needs, submits requests to ensure vendor/suppliers are delivered on time.

  • Monitors, evaluates, and implement strategies to reduce costs and increase efficiency.

  • Promotes innovation and excellence in clinical, service, and team performance. Uses innovative ideas to increase productivity, reduce costs, and develop positive and proactive team members.

Professional/Leadership

  • Motivates and manages nurses, technicians, and other healthcare workers

  • Manages the unit/service line's day-to-day clinical operations, including practice standards, staffing, budgets, fiscal management and quality improvement Develops and implements action plans to improve staff development

  • Acts as a professional leadership role model

  • Manages, plans and monitors unit/service line activities Hires, evaluates and counsels unit/service line personnel

  • Utilizes appropriate university/college/UI Health systems to facilitate optimal staffing, scheduling and patient assignments

  • Manages and controls unit/service line expenditures within establish budgets

  • Communicates effectively and maintains confidentiality with patients/families, dental staff, nursing staff and interdepartmental staff

  • Advocates for patients, families, and their significant others, coworkers, community, and the nursing profession

  • Promotes and supports Shared Leadership as the selected method of nursing governance

  • Promotes collaboration between coworkers, all members of the health care team as well as patients, their families, and significant others

  • Demonstrates the highest level of customer service to internal and external customers

  • Communicates in an effective and professional manner to reach conflict resolution Actively participates in College communication processes through timely review and response to electronic and written messages

  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

1.Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.

2.Three years of professional nursing experience

OR Two years of professional nursing experience and one year of related advanced education.

3.Current American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers

  • Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training

  • Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
