Medgar Evers College (MEC), a nationally recognized leader in urban-serving education, is one of twenty three colleges within the dynamic City University New York {CUNY) System. Named for the late civil rights leader, Medgar Wiley Evers (192S-1963), the College's mission is to develop and maintain high quality, professional, career-oriented undergraduate degree programs in the context of liberal education.

Located in Central Brooklyn, MEC was established in 1970 with a mandate to meet the educational and social needs of the Central Brooklyn community, currently enrolling 7,000 students in degree programs. The Center for Law and Social Justice (CLSJ) is a unit of MEC whose mission is to provide legal advocacy on community impact issues affecting people of African Descent and the disaffected. Founded in 1985, CLSJ focuses on a wide range of racial justice issues in New York City. CLSJ undertakes research, advocacy training, legal counseling, community education, public policy advocacy, and litigation.

Reporting to the Academic Center Director, the Deputy Director will be responsible for the day-to-day business management of CLSJ, including but not limited to:

  • Oversee the administration and general operation of the CLSJ in the absence of the Director

  • Assist the Director in all phases of development and administration of projects, grants and activities of CLSJ

  • Monitor CLSJ's earnings and expenses and authorize the procurement of materials and equipment

  • Manage resource allocations, staff scheduling, and HR actions for CLSJ.

  • Serve as program and fiscal liaison for Medgar Evers College, CUNY Budget Office, research Foundation of CUNY and grantors

  • Administrator of law office operations and systems for the security of legal documents. Interface with court personnel (at the agency, state and federal level) and assist in the production, distribution and filing of legal documents.

  • Interface with city, state and federal legislative office personnel and assist in the production and distribution of documents related to public policy and advocacy.

  • Interface with community based organizations and community residents to assist in education and advocacy related projects.

  • Manage the preparation of the annual budget, and budget modifications for CLSJ projects and grants with CLSJ Project coordinators. Submit approved budgets to Medgar Evers, CUNY, the Research Foundation of CUNY (RF/CUNY), grantors, and other appropriate agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree and six years' relevant experience required.

  • Collect information for, produce, and distribute department reports covering program, fiscal, and human resources issues

  • Independently carries out unit activities such as approvals, student interactions, and participation in campus- or university-wide committees and projects.
