KEY FUNCTIONS

Section Research Planning and Preparation

  • Plans, coordinates and oversees the preparation of new funding applications for section faculty.

  • Works with section staff to coordinate grant activities within the section.

  • Identifies and assists faculty in obtaining extramural research funding.

  • Develops and manages the section's implementation of systems, policies, and procedures affecting the submission, review, approval, contract negotiation, activation, regulation, tracking, and reporting of research projects as well as review and submission of grant applications and annual reports, according to institutional and external requirements.

  • Researches contract opportunities to both identify requests for proposals from federal and foundation entities that meet the section's research agenda and identifies and contacts funding sources that have funding priorities that can be achieved by research projects proposed by the program.

Section Research Implementation and Management

  • Oversees and manages funding and expenditures for research personnel and non-personnel.

  • Forecast salary expenses and make recommendations on personnel funds and fund source transfers; ensure that active funds are not operated in deficit; and that deficits are corrected in a timely fashion.

  • Has oversight over eligibility for different funding sources as requested, as well as all budgets for funded protocols in the section.

  • Plans, budgets and processes research contracts, including sponsor budget negotiations.

  • In conjunction with the department's financial staff, works with Grants and Contracts Accounting to assure timely closure of project chart fields at the completion of the relevant study.

  • Responsible for the timely quarterly completion of faculty effort reports to assure accurate and timely effort reporting on all grants and contracts; accountable for both cost-shared and funded faculty effort; oversees the classified effort reports prepared by the department's financial staff for section personnel.

  • Reviews and determines appropriate sources of funds for all section personnel; responsible for the timely resolution of HCM fund end date reports each month.

Manages the operations of the section's research infrastructure to include:

  • Participate in the development of data driven justifications of new positions and rehires.

  • Evaluate direct reports and participate in the evaluation of indirect reports. Recruit and make hiring decisions. Ensure the adequacy of staffing plans.

  • Initiate and implement disciplinary action as needed.

  • Provide mentorship and coaching to direct reports.

  • Implement employee recognition programs and recommend employees for institutional and external award programs.

  • Ensure the existence of professional development and on-going education plans for all direct reports.

  • Ensure employee compliance with institutionally mandated training and education programs.

Section Strategic Planning and Reporting

  • In collaboration with the Section Chief and/or the Department Administrator, provides long-term strategic planning on research funding and programs.

  • Ensures projects have appropriate resources, including planning, education, and staffing and administrative support.

  • Assures the section's compliance with institutional and federal requirements and regulations.

  • Manages and/or coordinates audits of systems and practices to ensure quality and regulatory compliance.

  • Prepares, reviews, and maintains reports on the section's clinical patient care protocol research.

  • Directs the development of policies and procedures for research projects and assures appropriate approval from institutional compliance committees and funding agencies.

  • Develops, writes, modifies, formats, and submits research protocols and reports on the status of those studies.

  • Writes and edits grants, manuscripts, abstracts, and research reports.

  • Directs and/or coordinates strategies to enhance collaboration between investigators and clinical or research scientists.

  • Prepares and gives formal presentations on areas of subject matter expertise.

EDUCATION

Required: Bachelor's degree in Science, Healthcare, Nursing or related field.

Preferred: Master's degree in Science, Healthcare, Nursing or related field.

EXPERIENCE

Required: Seven years of extensive research administrative experience in a biotechnology or academic setting to include three years experience with research protocols, grants and contracts and three years supervisory/management experience. With preferred degree, five years of required experience to include three years experience with research protocols, grants and contracts and three years supervisory/management experience. Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate program may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience.
