What You'll Do

To lead a group defined as a distinct administrative entity known as the Director for Adult Hospitals Respiratory Care Services and reports to the Chief Nursing Officer of the Adult Hospitals, as well as partners with the MPlan medical director. In this position you will plan and direct the administrative and operation activities including promotes the mission, vision, values, and goals of Michigan Medicine. The role develops and implements short and long-range strategies to meet the base mission of patient care, education, and research in the healthcare environment. These duties include but are not limited to the delivery of patient care services, budgetary responsibilities, human resource functions, and capital asset management. This position demands leadership skills such as appropriate judgment, clinical advice/expertise, dependability, collaboration and effective communication.

Responsibilities*

  • Oversees and ensures that the provision of Respiratory Care services and testing, maintenance, disinfection or sterilization of respiratory care equipment and supplies meet acceptable standards and comply with Michigan Medicine/UMHS policies, as well as state and federal regulations where applicable. Maintains the appropriate records regarding these procedures and processes.

  • Works with the MPlan Medical Director in planning long and short-term goals for departmental operations.

  • Responsible for daily supervision of Respiratory Therapy Supervisors, Instructors, Clinical Specialists, and Respiratory Therapists working in all areas.

  • Responsible for the development of annual performance plans, including goal setting and progress assessment, for departmental personnel.

  • Responsible for performance evaluation of management team personnel. Responsible for approving staff schedules.

  • Responsible for reviewing and approving staffing plans and oversight of daily work assignments.

  • Develops, interprets, implements, and understands Michigan Medicine/UMHS and department policies and procedures.

  • Responsible for the coordination of performance improvement and Quality Assurance activities for CW Respiratory Care service areas.

  • Completes training and maintains competency in High-Reliability Organization skills.

  • Schedules and participates in regular meetings with Respiratory Therapy Supervisors, Respiratory Therapists, Specialists, and Instructors.

  • If needed and so designated, must be able to perform all job responsibilities of the job classifications over which he/she exercises supervision.

  • Responsible for any other tasks delegated by the Chief Nursing Officer.

  • Responsible for supervision and coordination of departmental clinical and basic research initiatives.

Required Qualifications*

  • Credentialed as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NRBC)

  • Active license as a Respiratory Therapist by the Michigan Department of Community Health's Board of Respiratory Care

  • Master's degree in administration, business, science, education, respiratory care, or other related field

  • Minimum of 5 years clinical experience as a respiratory therapist

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in respiratory care management or other related healthcare management

  • Demonstrated expert knowledge in the field of respiratory care

  • Demonstrated knowledge of business practices, budgeting and accounting, purchasing, payroll, personnel, academic, and research functions

  • Demonstrated knowledge of project/program development and implementation

  • Proficiency in the use of modern information technology including but not limited to MS Office Suite, clinical documentation systems and other elated enterprise-wide business application

  • Maintain continuous professional/leadership development

  • Active membership in the AARC and MSRC

Desired Qualifications*

  • Research and publication experience

  • Experience in labor relations and unions

Additional Information

This position reports directly to the Chief Nursing Officer for UH/CVC Adult Hospitals, as well as partnering with the MPlan Medical Director for respiratory services. You will collaborate with nurse leadership and other non-nursing leadership and staff.

Functional and administrative supervision is exercised, directly and/or in-directly with all personnel and activities associated with operations, direction and support for UH/CVC Respiratory Care Services.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
