Teach first- and second-year Spanish courses and/or our Latin American Studies course, which involves culture, history, and sociopolitical topics in Hispanic and Lusophone countries on the American continent. Our courses are taught through a decolonial lens. Our language courses are flipped, OER, communicative, task- and discussion-based, and apply career readiness. Some knowledge of gender-neutral language in Spanish is expected.

First- and second-year Spanish are offered in three formats: hybrid (classroom + conversation/online cultural assignments), livestream (i.e., synchronous online/Zoom), and online (asynchronous/fully online). We are particularly interested in candidates who can teach two modalities. Candidates who are hired will be expected to complete a paid 10-hour self-paced online pedagogy training within the first month. For those interested in learning more about online and livestream teaching, the college offers paid training through the Faculty Development office.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

1.Become familiar with and abide by all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the organization.

2.Maintain professional etiquette in communications with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.

3.Provide appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments.

4.Return graded assignments in a timely fashion per department standards.

5.Maintain student attendance records (for Financial Aid purposes) and grades.

6.Conduct a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance.

7.Inform students of progress-to-date periodically and assigns and submits grades by published deadlines.

8.Assist in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment.

9.Prepare and submit incident reports to Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.



  1. Maintain professional and collegial behavior.

  2. Handle/respond to student concerns/complaints, and responds to student communications and inquiries promptly (generally within 1‐2 days).

  3. Maintain professional appearance as defined by the discipline and/or College procedure.

  4. Complete all required employee trainings.

  5. Know and enforce FERPA guidelines.

  6. Provide ADA accommodations as requested.

  7. Other job-related duties as needed.


Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued

Minimum Qualifications

  1. M.A. or Ph.D. in the target language (literature or culture), or a related language degree.

  2. Native or advanced level of fluency in the target language.

  3. Native or near-native level of fluency in English.

  4. Experience or interest in teaching either online or livestream modes in addition to face-to-face.

  5. Training in foreign language pedagogy and knowledge of best practices.

  6. At this time language adjuncts are expected to teach one or two courses a semester. If teaching two courses, only one can be in the online or livestream format. Local residency is therefore expected.


Preferred Qualifications

  1. M.A. or Ph.D. in the target language (literature, culture, or linguistics) or a related language degree.

  2. Native level of fluency in the target language, or a ranking of Advanced-Mid or higher as scored by an official Oral Proficiency Interview of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Adjuncts hired to teach Latin American Studies or other bridge courses are required to demonstrate Advanced High or higher proficiency.

  3. Knowledge of decolonial studies, gender-neutral language, and Brazil.

  4. Two or more years of experience teaching beginning and intermediate language at the college level.

  5. Training in foreign language pedagogy and knowledge of best practices.

  6. Skilled in the use of Canvas or other learning management systems.

  7. Knowledge of and experience in computer-assisted learning, and online language instructional methodologies.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, culture, ethnic background, and abilities, to maintain good working relationships across the College.

  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.

Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties Special Instructions

This is a pooled position. The department reviews applications as positions become available.

1.Applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States.

2.In accordance with SLCC policy, adjunct positions are offered on a semester by semester basis with no guarantee of continued employment.

3.Official transcripts are required for those who are offered employment within 30 days of hire.

4.In accordance with Board of Regents policy, SLCC's Human Resources will conduct a criminal background check on instructors if concurrent enrollment (K-12) students are assigned to classes.
