The Department of Social Work at Western Carolina University is looking for qualified part-time (adjunct) faculty to teach selected courses or supervise social work student field placements. These appointments are on a course by course basis.

Salary is commensurate with education and experience. This posting is continuous in order to develop a qualified pool of interested candidates. If your academic area of interest/expertise meets the programmatic needs of the WCU Social Work Department, you may be contacted to discuss proposed teaching opportunities.

These needs change from semester to semester. Minimum qualifications Master's degree in Social Work with some practice experience. Candidates who teach in the substance abuse certificate program must be certified as a substance abuse counselor (CSAC) or hold licensure as a clinical additions specialist (LCAS). Preferred:

This full-time faculty position will serve as the inaugural Social Work Care Coordinator and will hold joint appointments in Dentistry & Social Work. The School of Social Work will provide primary supervision of this position; The Adams School of Dentistry will be the primary worksite. The School of Social Works mission is to advance equity, transform systems, and improve lives. The mission of the Adams School of Dentistry is to transform dentistry for better health. Together, a Social Work Care Coordinator will be responsible for developing and organizing this inaugural position to support social work services within the Adams School of Dentistry, and student learning within both Schools. This clinical faculty position is a 12-month (1.0 FTE) appointment beginning October 1, 2019. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following primary areas: Behavioral Health & Care Management Interventions: Development and evaluation of social work services within the Adams School of Dentistry to increase access to dental care and for the retention of patients experiencing difficulty completing treatment due to transportation issues, behavioral health issues, health complications, financial limitations, or other barriers to dental care. Provide assessment and brief, solution-focused, time limited intervention to increase access to dental care for special needs and at- risk populations. Provide brief case management to the patients based on needed referrals. Manage a social work caseload of 25-35 patients. Work within existing clinical-structures/operations to develop ways for student learners and practice faculty to seek social work consultation services. Supervision Collaboration with School of Social Work MSW program and its Field Education Program to ensure the Adams School of Dentistry is a field placement site for UNC-Chapel Hill, School of Social Work (UNC-SSW) MSW students to provide case management services to patients. Direct supervision and task coordination of UNC-SSW MSW students who provide case management services to dental school patients. Supervision and care management coordination can grow to include up to four UNC-SSW Master of Social Work students annually. Teaching Teach one MSW course during the academic year (to be negotiated with the Senior Associate Dean for MSW Education at the School of Social Work). Be responsive to guest lecturing in Adams School of Dentistry and on related materials to social factors impact care, the social determinants of health, communication, and other related topics upon request. Engagement Coordinate social work involvement in community outreach events. Collaboration with financial, transportation, behavioral health, health, and legal community services when appropriate. Collaborate with faculty at the Adams School of Dentistry and School of Social Work to organize and present material at relevant dental and social work conferences. Attend lectures and trainings as necessary to enhance education and practice. Collaborate interprofessionally across campus and units via the Office of Interprofessional Education and Practice; UNC Healthcare and other entities. Skills or Attributes: - Experience working as a social work clinician in an integrated setting(s) - Understanding of integrated care that includes the role of social work in physical and oral health settings. This includes an understanding of team-based communication, care coordination, electronic health records, workflow, etc. - Collaborative, flexible, willing to role make - Evidence of behavioral heal A minimum 3 years post-MSW direct practice experience is required.Applicants must possess a MSW degree from an accredited CSWE social work program.
