Saint Joseph's University's Department of Chemistry has an ongoing need for highly qualified adjunct/affiliate faculty to staff a food chemistry in Fall 2023. This Part-time adjunct faculty will instruct a combined food chemistry lecture and lab to be taught to undergraduate food marketing majors in fulfillment of their general education program (GEP) in the sciences.

From the catalog: CHM 112 Food Chemistry (4 credits)

The study of chemistry as it specifically relates to food. Underlying basic chemical principles will allow the study of particular molecules found in food (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids) and the changes these molecules undergo as they are cooked and absorbed.

Topics will also include preservation, food safety, and food additives. This laboratory course will introduce students to the use of laboratory techniques to study food, including the measurement of food properties including pH, flavor, color, and texture. Students will learn how chemical and physical changes can alter food quality.

Successful completion of CHM 112/112L fulfills the GEP science requirement for Food Marketing majors only. It will serve as a free-elective for all other majors.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching of a specified course CHM112/112L Food Chemistry:

Currently the course is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday

Lecture 8:00am to 9:15am

Lab 9:30am to 10:45am

The candidate will be responsible for:

Preparation of materials

Providing support and guidance to students

Keeping posted office hours (1 hr per course)

Giving prompt, regular feedback to students about their academic performance

Reporting mid-semester and final grades electronically

Secondary Responsibilities:

Cooperating with course coordinators or other program faculty to assure quality and consistency across the program

Minimum Requirements:

Master's Degree in Chemistry.

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD in Chemistry, with previous teaching experience.
