At Blue Ridge Community College, the role of an Adjunct Instructor within our Public Safety Training Department encompasses a broad spectrum of responsibilities to foster a technologically advanced, supportive, and innovative learning environment. This position is integral to our mission of guiding students towards achieving their highest potential, whether they're entering the workforce for the first time, transitioning into a new profession, or seeking to expand their knowledge in the fields of Public Safety Administration, Fire & Rescue, EMS, Law Enforcement, Political Science, Criminal Justice, and CPR.
Instructors deliver high-quality, evidence-based instruction across various platforms, ensuring that course materials and teaching methods are up-to-date and engaging. This includes preparing and delivering lesson plans, advising students, maintaining course records, and updating instructional materials to reflect the latest industry standards and practices. Furthermore, instructors play a key role in engaging with the community to meet and exceed educational standards, embodying our commitment to creativity, innovation, and excellence.
In addition to teaching responsibilities, the role involves ensuring compliance with all policies and procedures of the College, the NC Community College System, and applicable state and federal regulations, thereby maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of the educational process. This position requires a dedication to safety, professional integrity, effective communication, and the maintenance of the necessary technical competencies for the job.

As an Adjunct Instructor in the Public Safety Training Division at Blue Ridge Community College, you will be entrusted with diverse duties designed to enhance our students' learning experience and contribute to our programs' overall success. Your key responsibilities will include:
Teaching and Curriculum Development: Deliver engaging and informative courses within your specialty, whether Public Safety Administration, Fire & Rescue, EMS, Law Enforcement, Political Science, Criminal Justice, or CPR. You'll utilize innovative teaching methods and technologies to facilitate learning, both online and in person, and keep your course content current with industry standards and practices.
Student Evaluation and Support: Assess student performance through a variety of measures, provide timely and constructive feedback, and maintain accurate records of student progress. You'll also advise students on course requirements and career pathways, supporting them in achieving their educational and professional goals.
Resource Management: Assist in the selection and evaluation of educational materials, supplies, and equipment to ensure that our programs are equipped with the necessary resources to support effective learning outcomes.
Professional Development: Maintain mastery of your discipline through continuous learning and professional development. This includes staying abreast of the latest trends, technologies, and best practices in your field to ensure that your teaching remains relevant and impactful.
Community Engagement and Compliance: Work closely with colleagues, industry partners, and the broader community to uphold and exceed educational standards. You'll also ensure adherence to all college, state, and federal policies and regulations, safeguarding the integrity of our programs and the welfare of our students.
Administrative Duties: Perform various administrative tasks as needed, including but not limited to record-keeping, course scheduling, and participation in departmental meetings and committees. Your contribution will help streamline operations and foster a collaborative and efficient learning environment.

For Criminal Justice, Political Science, and Public Safety Administration Instructors:
Education: A Master's degree in Criminal Justice, Political Science, or Public Safety Administration is preferred. At a minimum, candidates must possess 18 graduate hours in the relevant field.
Experience: At least 4 years of verifiable and relevant professional experience in a workplace setting or demonstrated instructional/teaching environment within the field of study.
For Law Enforcement, Detention, and Telecommunicator Instructors:
Education: A minimum of a High School diploma is required; an Associate degree or higher in Criminal Justice or a related field is preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 4 years of experience in the relevant field.
Certifications: Criminal Justice Training and Standards or Sheriff's Standards Instructor Certification Required for Commission Courses
For EMS Instructors:
Education: A High School Diploma or equivalent is required; an Associate degree or higher in a related field is preferred.
Experience: At least 1 year of verifiable and relevant professional experience in EMS or a demonstrated instructional/teaching environment. At least 4 or more years of relevant experience is preferred.
Certifications: Must be NCOEMS /NREMT certified EMT or higher. Level I Instructor Preferred. Level II Instructor Highly Preferred.
For Fire & Rescue Instructors:
Associate Degree Program:
Education: An Associate degree in Fire Protection Technology or a related field is required; a Bachelor's degree or higher is preferred.
Experience: At least 4 years of verifiable and relevant professional experience in Fire & Rescue.
Continuing Education Classes:
Education: A High School Diploma or equivalent is required; an Associate degree or higher in a related field is preferred.
Experience: At least 2 years of verifiable and relevant professional experience in the Fire & Rescue field or a demonstrated instructional/teaching environment. At least 4 or more years of relevant experience is preferred.
Certifications: Must maintain current NCOSFM Level I Instructor certification. Level II Instructor and Qualified preferred.
For CPR
Certifications: American Heart Association certification as a Heartsaver, BLS, ACLS, ACLS-EP, PEARS, or PALS Instructor
Experiences: At least 1 year of practical experience in a healthcare or public safety-related profession.
