Do Great Things! Durham Technical Community College is hiring an adjunct instructor in the Workforce Development and Career Readiness Program. The Adjunct Instructor is responsible for course preparation, delivery, grading, and records management. The Instructor will work closely with the HRD/CS Director or Coordinator on matters related to and for the benefit of the HRD/Workforce Development program and its students.
Teach all courses, as assigned, for the full duration of scheduled instruction
Be fully prepared with a syllabus and instructional plans for each class session in accord with the stated objectives of the course
Enforce academic policy and procedures at all times, and comply with institutional rules and regulations
Maintain complete course and student records, reports, and forms
Participates in the curriculum development and monitoring process.
Makes recommendations for additions to, or upgrading of, curriculum, course materials, equipment, and textbooks.
Shares course materials and insights with other faculty members.
Keeps up-to-date and in contact with local employers regarding appropriateness of course/program content.
Stay current with developments in the field of instruction
Assume other necessary responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the chair, department dean, chief instructional officer, or president, in meeting the needs of the department, division, and college
Assume responsibility for laboratory/classroom preparation, including maintenance and cleanup, and recommend, as necessary, appropriate laboratory supplies and equipment
Facilitates classroom activities in a manner that is consistent with the course syllabus and outline.
Utilizes active learning techniques to maintain a challenging learning environment for students; utilizes a variety of media/audio-visual/technology materials to achieve course goals and objectives, and to engage students representing variety of student learning styles.
Utilizes effective delivery skills (e.g., eye contact, voice intonation, and various questioning techniques).
Draws on personal experiences to relate the material presented.
Utilizes additional community resources in instruction (i.e., field trips, presentations by guest speakers) relevant to course objectives.
Continually promotes the development and effective use of higher cognitive level/critical thinking skills in students.
Complete all mandatory training.
Associate's degree and/or commensurate teaching experience with youth and adult learners and/or experience in the area of employability skills or employment readiness
Work Experience:
Successful secondary teaching and/or college experience or career focused business experience
Thorough understanding of and commitment to the mission and philosophy of the North Carolina Community College System
Understanding and commitment to the mission and philosophy of program, workforce and economic development.
Ability to work with diverse populations, local government agencies and non profits.
Demonstrated ability to use modern instructional technology (Microsoft Office, , e-mail, Internet).
Competence in oral and written communication skills necessary for effective teaching
Ability to be organized, accurate, and punctual with paperwork and assigned tasks
Sensitivity to the needs and expectations of students, colleagues, and community groups
Ability to make presentations to small or large audiences
Ability to establish and maintain effective, civil, and respectful communication and interpersonal relations throughout the college and the community
Personal integrity, honesty, and the ability to maintain confidentiality
Familiarity with OSHA standards as they apply to educational environments
