Job description-

The School of Sciences & Humanities at Wentworth Institute of Technology seeks an Adjunct Faculty to teach two lectures of Ancient World Civilizations for the Fall 2024 semester beginning in September. This course is an option for all Wentworth students to complete their required Humanities credits. The classes are scheduled in person Mondays and Wednesdays 1-2:45pm and 3-4:45pm staring September 3rd and finishing December 10th. The course will have about 25 students.

Essential job functions-

The adjunct faculty member is responsible for:

  • Preparing a syllabus for the course and distributing the syllabus to thestudents, based on recommendation of the School of Sciences and

Humanities and the provost office

  • Teaching lectures and/or labs of sciences courses in collaboration with thecourse coordinator

  • Preparing quizzes, labs and exams.

  • Grading assignments and exams in a timely manner

  • Meeting students during office hours outside of class as required.

This specific course surveys the cultures and histories of major world civilizations from human evolution until the 15th century C.E. with a concentration on European and Asian civilizations.

Course description and learning outcomes:

This course introduces a fascinating array of individuals and civilizations that existed in exotic locations worldwide and whose cultures and actions intertwined over time to form the "global village" we live in today. Thus, through our study of the past, we will highlight the five key features that shaped civilizations-politics, technology, economics, art and architecture, and religion-and will explore how an understanding of these features sheds light on how people organize their societies. We will also celebrate the diversity of the world's cultures and will explore how the 21st century world can thrive through cross-cultural inclusion and social equity. Since history has shown that knowledge is power, it is hoped that by learning about the events, people, and developments that have shaped modern American-and ultimately global-culture you will gain a knowledge of how societies change that will inform your careers as ethical, well-informed, and successful individuals within an increasingly interconnected world.

Course learning outcomes-

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the history and culture of several ancient societies.

  • Interpret a large body of historical data through writing assignments and quizzes.

  • Articulate an original historical interpretation on writing assignments.

  • Explain the global nature of the modern world.

  • Analyze the diverse cultural foundations of American society.

Humanities and Social Sciences Learning Outcomes:

  • Analyze and evaluate the nature and consequences of human behavior, including the implications of dominant culture's impact on marginalized populations based on race, gender, and gender expression, socio-economic status, sexual preference, body type and size, ability, and other categorizations.

  • Effectively express ideas through written, visual and/or digital output utilizing discipline-specific vocabulary/terminology/conventions.

  • Critically assess and apply frameworks to the analysis of cultural and social issues.

Required qualifications-

  • Masters in History, Archeology or an appropriate related field.
  • 1-3 years as a primary course instructor at the college/university level

Preferred Qualifications-

  • PhD in History, Archeology or an appropriate related field.
  • 1-3 years as a primary course instructor at the college/university level
  • demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in interpersonal and large group settings
  • experience using engaged student approaches in the classroom
  • demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
