Renton Technical College (RTC) is seeking a dedicated GED Instructor passionate about empowering adults through education at the King County Jail in Kent. Our values of student-first, trauma-informed instruction, and cultural responsiveness are central to this role. You will be responsible for teaching GED subjects to residents incarcerated. This program supports a diverse group of incarcerated individuals, each with unique backgrounds, educational needs and future placements which could include community un/supervised or other facilities across the state. Residents at the King County Jail have not necessarily all been to trial or convicted.

Reporting directly to the Associate Dean of High School Programs, you will provide individualized and group instruction tailored to the needs of our students. You will teach GED subjects and work closely with the jail staff to coordinate enrollments and testing. This role requires familiarity with the GED program requirements. This position will teach about 15-18 credits fall, winter, spring and will be on-site for that time. From the facility, teaching assignments may include face-to-face, online synchronous and asynchronous, hybrid, and/or flexible teaching that includes face-to-face instruction with an online synchronous component. This position is represented by the Renton Federation of Teachers (RFT) Employees Association. This position is scheduled to commence Fall Quarter 2024, continuing with annual 9-month academic year contracts (summer quarter separate). Annual salary will include a pending general wage increase as well as a degree stipend.Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis as needs arise within each department. Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions Include

  • Demonstrate multicultural competence (including an awareness and understanding of historically minoritized populations) and create an educational and work environment that affirms commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the program's learning objectives.

  • Present the subject matter according to guidelines established by SBCTC, OSPI, and/or Renton Technical College.

  • Plan and utilize appropriate instructional/learning strategies, activities, materials, and technology that accommodate diverse student needs.

  • Support students with academic materials and respond to questions.

  • Manage timeline for GED testing and preparedness in cooperation with King County staff.

  • Advise new and enrolled students and provide regular feedback.

  • Work in cooperation with King County staff and navigator to develop pathways post-release or transfer

  • Create a stimulation learning environment in which students can build critical thinking skills.

  • Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results for instructional activities.

  • Work cooperatively with the department of Disability Resource Services to modify curricula or make appropriate accommodations for students.

  • Prepare and deliver lesson plans that reflect accommodation for individual student learning differences and needs.

  • Work with other staff members to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods.

  • Cooperate with other team members within the program/department in implementing instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to graduation requirements.

  • Participate in professional development activities.

  • Integrate different technology and/or applications in the teaching/learning environment.

  • Create an inclusive environment recognizing the nuances of incarceration and lived experiences

  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.

  • Keep record of different assessments, results obtained, and list of suggestions for future use when possible.

  • Record student attendance.

  • Complete grades as required based on the academic calendar.

  • Coordinate class and small group activities.

  • Contribute to the appreciation of diversity and foster a climate of multicultural understanding.

  • Create a place that embraces positive experiences for student success.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated leadership or participation in institutional programs with persons from diverse backgrounds such as sexual orientation, racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, socio-economic, physical and learning abilities, and a commitment to an inclusive and equitable working / learning environment.

  • Earned bachelor's degree in education, or closely related fields. Or, three (3) or more years of closely related work experience in a higher education setting. Earned master's degree in adult education, or closely related fields, preferred.

  • Experience in curriculum development, instruction design, and assessments.

  • Experience and thorough understanding of policies, processes, and best practices specific to GED and Pearson.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail required as well as previous experience maintaining accurate records, managing multiple tasks, and planning and organizing work to meet changing priorities and deadlines.

  • Background and experience teaching adults in a basic skills program.

  • Experience developing a variety of assessment options for student learning outcomes, preferably in a higher education setting.

  • Ability to work successfully with faculty, academic administrators, and staff in both individual and group settings.

  • Successful experience using tact, discretion, and courtesy when interacting with diverse populations of varied ethnicity, ages, backgrounds and abilities, and a commitment to a culturally diverse environment.

  • The ability to establish rapport and build professional relationships with students and partners with a broad range of diverse people, abilities, culture, and ethnic background.

  • Demonstrated success building and maintaining interpersonal relationships.

  • Ability to work under minimal supervision and manage multiple priorities.

  • Excellent computer skills; specifically, Microsoft Office applications.

  • Excellent time management, planning, and organizational skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Experience incorporating technology in the classroom.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Working hours are generally aligned to business hours, Monday - Friday. This position is on-site at the Kent Regional Justice Center. Frequent use of a computer and exposure to terminal screens is required. Work and meetings may take place across campus. May drive/travel to trainings, conferences, and/or college events. This is mostly an in-person/off-campus position; remote work may occur as business permits.

Terms of Employment

In the interest of providing a healthy, safe and secure educational and work environment, and in order to meet the requirements of federal legislation, it is the policy of Renton Technical College to maintain an alcohol and drug-free workplace for our employees and students.

This is an adjunct faculty position contracted on a quarterly basis. Lecture (theory) credits are compensated at $1,058 per credit, which includes scheduled class time and final exam days. All guided practice instructional credits for adjunct will be paid with an additional pay factor of 1.33. Future advancement in base salary, up to the current maximum of $1,592 per credit, is based upon a combination of years of service accrued at our college and professional development activity.

Degree Stipend:

Master's or Doctorate degree stipends are paid on a prorated per credit rate quarterly.
