General Information

The College is interested in seeking candidates to teach dental hygiene courses in the Fall and Winter semesters at our downtown campus and various regional sites. A criminal background check will be conducted on all finalists prior to employment with Grand Rapids Community College.

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintain accurate course records and submit related reports as requested.

  • Effectively assess student performance.

  • Create a safe and inclusive learning environment for students.

  • Utilize multiple strategies to facilitate learning, i.e. small group work, workshops, etc.

  • Incorporate new technologies and methods that enhance teaching and learning into his/her instructional methods.

  • Support the Department and College through other work normally expected of adjunct faculty members.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education and Credentials

  • A current active Michigan dental hygienists or dentist (DDS or DMD) license

  • Certification in local anesthesia and nitrous oxide sedation

  • Current CPR certification.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years' clinical practice as a dental hygienist or dentist

  • Minimum 2 years' college teaching experience or experience teaching adult learners.

  • Successful teaching experience at a Community College preferred but not required.

  • Experience working with adults from diverse backgrounds and with varying academic skills.

  • Participation in professional development and/or continuous improvement activities in order to remain current in the field.

Major Teaching Responsibilities:

Dental supervision and instruction in dental hygiene clinic sessions.

  • Adhere to the American Dental Hygienists' Associations and American Dental Associations code of ethics. Adhere to safety regulations, maintain confidentiality, and use sound judgment in regards to safety of self and others.

  • An interest in teaching college-level material to high school students as part of a middle college or dual enrollment program.

  • Ability to work under pressure while possessing mature judgment and flexibility in regards to interruptions and schedule changes.

  • Must use good judgment in handling sensitive or difficult situations in a pleasant and professional manner.

Physical Demands

Demonstrate, assist and/or support students with:

  • Physical Strength - transferring patients to or from a wheelchair to a dental chair.Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.

  • Mobility -be able to stand, lift, reach, bend, and stretch, provide support and stability. Sufficient independent mobility within the architectural environment is necessary, including the ability to maneuver in restricted spaces. Move quickly in an emergency.

  • Hearing -hear faint sounds from a distance of 4 feet-approximately the distance between a patient seated in a dental chair and a person in a standing position next to the dental chair. Hear sounds such as those emitted by a stethoscope while taking a blood pressure.

  • Visual Discrimination - sufficient vision to differentiate movements, read markings on instruments and measuring devices.

  • Coordination - Sufficient motor skills, eye-hand coordination skills, manipulative skills and sensory function in both extremities to perform dental hygiene skills.

  • Manual Dexterity - sufficient fine motor skills to manipulative objects and people safely.

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to work in a classroom and laboratory in an academic setting.

  • Ability to work in high traffic, indoor environments.

  • Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings
