SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
Adjunct Faculty is instructional personnel whose services are contracted on a semester/term by semester/term basis. The workload is limited to two course sections per semester/term, unless three course sections are required to meet the needs of the students and/or College. Adjunct Faculty is paid by the credit hour.
Health information management is the study of the principles and practices of acquiring, analyzing, and protecting digital and traditional medical information vital to providing quality patient care.
The Health Information Technology (HIT) program incorporates the disciplines of medicine, management, finance, information technology, law, cancer registry and reimbursement. Because of this unique mixture, program graduates can choose from a variety of work settings across an array of healthcare environments. Courses in the HIT program include; Legal Aspects of Health Information, Introduction, Quality and Performance, Coding and professional practice.
There are four courses in coding in the HIM programs; HIT118 Introduction to Coding; HIT205 HCPCS/CPT-4 Coding; HIT209 ICD-10-CM Coding; HIT210 ICD-10-PCS Coding. Courses are taken by students in the AAS Health Information Technology; Coding Certificate; and Medical Billing Specialist programs.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The adjunct will be responsible for teaching any of the four coding courses in the HIT program in any semester.
Adjuncts will be responsible for making sure the course is up to date and content is current. This content includes:
Syllabus (following required college template)
Course Schedule
Quizzes
Tests
Assignments
Discussion Board questions
Grading Methodology
Reviewing and uploading appropriate content
Assisting with evaluation of textbooks, references, as well as computer software necessary for program course enhancement.
Instructor will be required to complete the Blackboard training course prior to being able to teach online.
OVERALL PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITY:
The most important overall responsibility of all RCBC employees is to provide service in a pleasant, helpful, and effective manner to our students, members of the college community and the public.
INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS:
Accepts responsibility for the timely preparation of student outcomes assessment efforts of the faculty in planning, collecting data, and reporting dates as they relate to course outcomes, program outcomes, general education outcomes, and developmental program outcomes. Actively participates in setting annual division goals and objectives, completing OIR reporting forms, collecting data, analyzing data, and preparing a report using guidelines established by OIR.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of Blackboard online course management system preferred.
Knowledge of pathology, pharmacology, medical terminology, ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT coding.
EDUCATION REQUIRED:
Bachelor's Degree or Higher and AHIMA credential Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Five or more years in the coding field with experience in HCPCS, CPT, ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS
SKILLS/ABILITIES/KNOWLEDGE/OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Good Oral and written communication skills
Ability to work with a diverse workforce
Strong critical thinking skills
Microsoft Office experience

In order to enable Adjunct Faculty to be effective and to meet the requirements associated with relevant teaching conditions, RCBC has outlined 1) appropriate Technology Tools, 2) a minimum level of proficiency with the Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS) and remote delivery, and 3) Webex Videoconferencing resources.
Adjunct Faculty should have access to a computer less than 6 years old and equipped with a webcam and microphone, as well as reliable high-speed internet service.
Adjunct Faculty must participate in Blackboard training with a verified level of proficiency in the following two self-paced courses A) 'Getting Started with Blackboard Learn' and B) 'Learn Teaching Essentials for Original'.
Webex is RCBC's accepted videoconferencing platform and allows for real-time instructor-student interactions and breakout sessions, for example. RCBC has created two interactive workshops, a maximum of one-and-a-half hours long, to address topics of interest to both beginner and advanced users. Recorded sessions will be continuously available for faculty viewing.
