Chief Objective of Position
Part-time teaching appointment in the Master of Occupational Therapy program (Radford or Roanoke campus) or Occupational Therapy Assistant program (Roanoke campus) Reports to the Chair, Department of Occupational Therapy.
Job Summary
Maintains credentials for the practice of occupational therapy, in order to incorporate clinical knowledge and skills into teaching
Teaches undergraduate or graduate courses in area(s) of expertise and interest, as assigned
Develops course objectives and teaching/learning experiences for students which reflect the program's philosophy of education
Continues development of proficiency in teaching through investigation, formal education, continuing education, and self-investigation
May develop clinical sites in underserved communities, in order to provide active learning opportunities for students
Promotes a positive image of occupational therapy and educates others about the profession both internally and externally.
Adjunct faculty positions supplement the faculty of a department wherever additional faculty are needed to provide instruction. Adjunct faculty hold appointments, as defined by their letter of appointment, without eligibility for tenure; where authorized by the Dean, adjunct appointments may be renewed. Adjunct faculty appointments do not guarantee a course assignment.
Physical Demands Required Qualifications
Must have a minimum of baccalaureate degree to teach in the OTA Program and minimum of master's degree to teach in the MOT program
Minimum of two years clinical experience as an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant
The capacity to create a positive environment and to work collaboratively with administrators, other faculty, staff, and students to achieve the goals and objectives of the department, college, and university.
Preferred Qualifications
Teaching experience (in an academic setting or as a continuing education provider) is desirable
Education
Adjunct faculty must hold equivalent credentials based on experience consistent with accreditation criteria of the discipline and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). All faculty must have at least a Master's degree in the field in which they are teaching with 18 graduate hours of course work related to the specified discipline to teach in the MOT prgram. Applicants must hold a minimum of a baccalaureate degree to teach in the OTA program.
In some cases, subject to the approval by the Provost, recommendation for appointment may be based on the substitution of significant experience for the degree. A memo from the Dean placed in the instructor's personnel file is required to justify an exception to the accreditation standards of SACS and must include certification of the knowledge and skills.
