JOB TITLE: Adjunct instructor: Public Speaking (Early College program)

SCHOOL: School of Humanities

POSITION SUMMARY: Rochester Christian University is seeking an on-ground (in-person) instructor to teach the following RCU course in the Fall 2024 semester, beginning the week of August 26 and ending December 13:

COM 1013-Communication Basics. The course will be taught at the Oxford High School campus. Candidates from historically underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

COM 1013 COURSE DESCRIPTION - Theory and practice in a variety of communication and public speaking contexts, including verbal, nonverbal, small group, and listening. Includes practice in organizing and delivering informative and persuasive speeches.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Master's Degree or higher in Communication Studies or a related discipline

  • Previous collegiate public speaking teaching experience preferred

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with the dean and director on syllabus and curriculum situated within RCU learning goals.

  • Effectively plan class activities and assignments, using multiple modalities for presenting concepts to students.

  • Report accurate grades & weekly attendance (in Canvas and an online portal), and give timely assignment feedback to students via Canvas, email and in-person in class.

  • Web enhance the course through the Canvas learning management system and be prepared to deliver content online if necessary due to Covid-19, inclement weather, etc.

  • Fulfill adjunct duties as outlined in the Faculty Handbook.

  • Keep up-to-date on departmental and university policies, procedures, and practices related to the classroom setting in order to provide accurate information or assistance to students.

  • Promote an inclusive RCU through demonstration of our Diversity Statement. Participate in developmental activities to increase understanding and awareness of issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion both individually and as related to the applicant's field of work, profession or discipline.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Skills and experience delivering lessons geared toward multiple learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic)

  • Ability to utilize Canvas for posting course syllabus, course content, assignments, grades, and course communications.

  • Ability to submit student attendance updates through an online portal regularly, and to submit final grades through the portal.

  • Ability to communicate and coordinate with Oxford Schools Early College (OSEC) staff on student concerns.
