Duties and Responsibilities:

| In addition to contractual duties for this position which will include counseling and program coordination, all faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, in their departmental activities and in the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the counseling assignment may be in the evening program. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1.Assisting students with decision-making and the exploration of their educational, career, and personal goals



  1. working with students to develop educational plans

3.Reviewing disability documentation to determine a student's eligibility for disability services and accommodations; and supporting the DSS manager with MIS reporting as needed

4.Working with DSS (Disability Support Services) students and their instructors to determine reasonable academic accommodations

5.Consulting with faculty and staff regarding best practices for working with students with disabilities

6.Providing professional development training for the college community regarding the needs of students with disabilities

7.Providing disability counseling to DSS students regarding learning strategies, self-advocacy skills, campus and community support services, and recommended accommodations

8.Adhering to the schedule that has been developed with the Department Chairpersons, which may include individual student appointments, drop-in assignments, workshops, and weekend and/or evening assignments

9.Collaborating with instructional faculty in support of the goals of the institution



  1. Promoting a philosophy that integrates counseling and mentoring to support student learning

  2. Participating in required training and activities such as conferences, regional meetings, outreach, orientations for students, community activities and social/cultural events, field trips, mentorship, advisory groups, etc.

  3. Participating in professional development activities, both departmental and college-wide

  4. Creating a positive environment that provides students with the support/motivation likely to enable them to transfer

  5. Maintaining current knowledge of counseling techniques and other effective student support intervention strategies

  6. Engaging in outreach targeting feeder high schools and community groups

  7. Maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics; 17. Performing other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience:

The applicant must possess one of the following qualifications (earned degrees must be from an accredited college/university):

The applicant must possess one of the following qualifications for DSS Counseling (earned degrees must be from an accredited college/university):

1.Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling or equivalent foreign degree, in rehabilitation counseling; OR

2.Master's degree or equivalent foreign degree, in special education and 24 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology or social work; OR

3.Master's degree in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, career development, or social welfare, and either 12 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically in counseling or rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities, or two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following: (A) Counseling or guidance for students with disabilities; or (B) Counseling and/or guidance in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities.

Desirable Qualifications:

1.Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion as well as sensitivity to and understanding of the socioeconomic, academic, cultural, sexual/gender identity, linguistic, and ethnic diversity within the community college population, including students with physical and/or learning disabilities

2.Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and development, innovation and improvement of counseling and teaching, and to assuming faculty responsibilities beyond the counseling department in a shared governance environment

3.Demonstrated experience providing academic counseling to college students with disabilities

4.Demonstrated experience using counseling and student planning tools such as Insite, Colleague, SARS, and websites such as assist.org

5.Demonstrated experience assisting students in developing a plan to achieve an educational and/or career goal (e.g., career/technical education, transfer, associate degree etc.)

6.Demonstrated experience teaching career planning, college orientation, college success, or other courses and workshops

7.Demonstrated knowledge of effective assistive technologies for college students with disabilities

8.Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff, faculty, and management.
