Job Description:

Title: Adjunct Clinical Instructor (Maternity)

Unit: Part Time Non Unit

Department: Nursing

Reports To: Dean of Nursing

Date: April 2024

General Summary:

  • The Clinical Instructor will prepare students for the clinical experience through an orientation to policies and procedures, of the health care facility and will become acquainted with faculty requirements for clinical site experiences. Each student will have the prerequisite content and courses, prior to the clinical experience.

  • The Clinical Instructor will make known to students in writing and online, the objectives and requirements of each clinical rotation and the methods of evaluation that will be used.

  • The Clinical Instructor will transmit to students a clear understanding of the legal liability of the clinical instructor role and the purpose of the clinical experience during orientation to the health care facility. Students will apply the content from their lectures, skills lab and simulation lab in the clinical practice setting. Students will work with patients from across the life span.

  • Clinical Instructors must have a minimum of a BSN with 5 years of experience or an MSN or be matriculated in a Master's in Nursing program. Clinical instructors must be licensed in Massachusetts, as indicated in the employment agreement. They must have recent experience in the specialty for which they are applying, ie. Maternity, Pediatrics, Fundamentals/ Med-Surg, or Mental Health Nursing It is up to the Clinical Instructor to obtain and maintain all assigned licenses throughout the course of their assignment.

  • It is expected that a Clinical Instructor will spend approximately 8-16 hours a week (depending on the course), inclusive of pre and post-conference, unless alternate arrangements have been made with the Dean of the Nursing Program. Semester start and end dates are determined by the college Registrar. Clinical usually starts after there has been Laboratory Skills Instruction and ends on the date closest to the end of the semester. Clinical faculty are to be available for each clinical day during the semester and to conduct an 8-hour day. There is no clinical if your regularly scheduled day falls on a college holiday or if the college closes for bad weather. Holidays and storm closing are determined by the University administration and the nursing program abides by those decisions.

Specific Duties:

  • Assume responsibility for meeting the clinical agency and course requirements for orientation to clinical agency.

  • Comply with Roxbury Community College and the clinical site for submission of required professional documentation.

  • Attend a faculty orientation at Roxbury Community College at the beginning of the semester and any team meetings throughout the semester.

  • Implement academic and professional standards set forth in the RCC Student Handbook.

  • Adhere to all policies set forth in the RCC Faculty Handbook.

  • Assume responsibility for the clinical supervision and teaching of 4-6 students in a clinical setting for a full semester. It is expected that adjunct faculty be prepared to provide coverage or be available for clinical make-up for missed clinical days.

  • Always be present with the students on the floor/unit.

  • Plan pre and post conference on each clinical day.

  • Plan and select appropriate clinical experiences which will meet the stated course objectives and student learning needs such as:

  • Careful assessment of the patient leading to a comprehensive care plan

  • Implementing and evaluating the plan of care

  • Medication Administration

  • Mastery of skills such as finger sticks, vital signs, urinary catheterization, aseptic technique, wound care

  • Interpretation of routine laboratory tests

  • Practice therapeutic communication

  • Practice collaboration with the health care team

  • Demonstrate cultural competence

  • Demonstrate respect for the students, patients, faculty, curriculum, program and facility

  • Prepare summary evaluation of student performance at termination of course, review with student, and submit signed forms to the course coordinator or the Dean of the program

  • Contribute to the evaluation of course activities at the termination of the course.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean of the Nursing Program.

Requirements:

  • Master of Science in Nursing degree from a regionally-accredited institution of higher education in the US.

  • Current, valid and unencumbered RN licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

  • Preferred five years in-patient nursing experience.

  • Experience in urban, multicultural higher education, laboratory and clinical settings.

  • Familiarity with multiple education modalities including simulation and online learning.

  • Superior interpersonal skills.

  • Evenings and weekend availability.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, and ability to learn new software requirements.

  • Current and unencumbered Massachusetts Driver's License.

This is a part-time clinical nursing position.
