VIEW JOBS 6/21/2018 12:00:00 AM 2018-09-19T00:00 The Biology Program Manager acts as an ambassador for the Biology Major throughout campus and beyond. The Biology Program Manager works under the direction of the faculty co-chairs of the major (one each from CALS and L&S), and also works closely with the Biology Major Program Committee, and four full-time academic staff advisors to provide professional, timely advising services to nearly 1500 students enrolled in the major as well as prospective Biology Major students from both on and off campus. Advising services include providing students with information about degree requirements, course options, research and internship opportunities, post-graduate opportunities, and other education enrichment experiences. The Biology Program Manager serves as the key liaison for the co-chairs, the Biology Major Program Committee, and the advisors, and is responsible for ensuring effective and regular communication among them. Because there is no Department of Biology at the UW-Madison, there are no faculty members permanently assigned to the major's oversight, advising, or instruction. As a result, the full-time staff advisors (and the Biology Program Manager in particular) provide crucial stability, consistency, and continuity for the students in the major; for the faculty who teach and administer the major; and for the many units around campus who interact with the major, including deans' offices, the registrar, admissions, and others. In order to effectively serve in this coordinative capacity, the Biology Program Manager (and the full-time staff advisors) are expected to maintain up-to-date knowledge of academic policies and procedures in both CALS and L&S, and to maintain communication with colleagues across campus to keep abreast of current issues. The Biology Major at UW-Madison is a cross-college undergraduate major offered to students in both the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and the College of Letters & Science. For administrative purposes, the major is housed in the departments of Bacteriology (CALS) and Integrative Biology (L&S). The Biology Program Manager and advisors serve students in both colleges, though for personnel purposes their positions are formally located within the Department of Bacteriology. The Biology Major is designed for students who are interested in a broad exposure to the concepts and methodologies of the biological sciences, as well as those interested in a more specific sub-discipline. There are currently three specialized Options within the major: one each in Neurobiology, Evolutionary Biology, and Plant Biology. Additional Information: The ideal candidate will possess most of the following qualities and skills: * Familiarity with biological sciences * Excellent interpersonal skills * Excellent written and verbal communication skills, comfortable speaking to a range of constituents, including large audiences. * Strong leadership abilities and supervision skills * Ability to set priorities while handling multiple responsibilities and deadlines * Ability to work well as a team member within a cross-college and multi- departmental academic program. * Student-centered philosophy related to academic advising services and policy development * Positive, helpful, customer-oriented approach to working with students, faculty, staff, and alumni * Problem-solving and analytical skills * Creativity and innovative ideas to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of academic services * High level of professionalism Preferred experience includes: * Experiences in program development, implementation, assessment, and management. * Experience using student record systems as a tool to monitor, manage, and improve the academic progress of individual students as well as cohorts of students. * Familiarity with FERPA and student development * Budget management experience. * Ability to maintain a website (using a content management system).
