ABOUT THIS POSITION

The Parks and Recreation Department provides residents and visitors with more than 41,000 acres of desert parks and mountain preserve land with more than 200 miles of trails; 187 parks; 33 community and recreation centers; eight golf courses; 29 pools; and classes, programs, and sports leagues. The Parks and Recreation Department also develops and maintains new parks, park amenities and facilities with funding from a variety of sources.

The Parks and Recreation Department is currently seeking friendly and outgoing individuals who enjoy working in a recreation environment. We currently have opportunities for Recreation Instructors and Recreation Leaders in our adaptive recreation section. Staff provide customer service, sports, leisure activities, support and educational programs to people of all ages and abilities and work various shifts throughout the entire Parks system.

Adaptive Recreation: This position will be responsible for supporting and providing the implementation of social, recreational, and additional services for individuals with developmental/intellectual disabilities. Adaptive recreation staff are responsible for indoor and outdoor activities related to the field. Knowledge and experience with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities is preferred.

  • Recreation Instructors: Develop, implement, and guide recreation activities and supervise children in sports programs, and/or recreation classes, assist with special events; and plan, schedule, and conduct recreation classes in activities such as arts and crafts, dance, drama, music, sports, and games, or may facilitate city-wide sports leagues and tournaments; oversee leagues or programs; prepare facilities; monitor activities.
  • Recreation Leaders: Perform recreation work in a lead capacity over Recreation Aides, Instructors, and volunteers or in charge of a facility or major program area. This position is responsible for providing various recreational programming at community centers and/or other facilities. This includes management of programs and coverage of facilities as required and to ensure safety of all participants.

SALARY

These positions are classified as part-time and are eligible for earned paid sick time, city training, and free or discounted bus and light rail fares. Starting pay for each position is listed below.

Recreation Instructor $18.16 hourly

Recreation Leader $19.07 hourly

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Recreation Instructor :

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or have completed the 12th grade.

Recreation Leader :

  • Completion of 60 semester hours of college work and a minimum of one year of recreation experience OR a bachelor's degree in Recreation, Education, or a related field.

In addition to the requirements above, all positions require the following:

  • Working irregular hours, split shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings.

  • These are seasonal/on-demand part time position based on program offerings; there is no guarantee of minimum hours or shifts.

  • Ability to:

  • Lift 50 pounds for at least 20 feet.

  • Bend and stoop repeatedly.

  • Stand for long periods of time.

  • Work outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust for all or a portion of the shift.

  • Travel between work sites during a scheduled shift may require use of personal vehicle.

  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have a good driving record. Use of a personal vehicle will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

  • A valid driver's license is required, and incumbents must be able to pass the Parks Department driver safety-training course.

  • This position will require the candidate to acquire/possess the following within the first 30 days of employment (these will be paid for with program funds as needed):

  • State of Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card

  • Article 9 Certification

  • CPR/First Aid

  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Experience either personal or professional working with/caring for with people with disabilities.
