Summary

Responsible for developing, coordinating, implementing, promoting, and supervising recreation programming. Support division operations, activities, programs, special events, and services. Monitor resource allocation, assist with the budget process, and provide administrative and technical support to department staff.

Essential Functions and Other Important Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

DUTIES

  • Supervise assigned staff, volunteers, and contract instructors; prepare facilities for programs, rentals, and special events.

  • Monitor work tasks, staff scheduling and assist with payroll.

  • Develop and implement programs and special events by assessing the needs of internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to, ensure program(s) goals and strategies are met, scheduling program dates, reserving program facilities, and collaborate with Marketing Administrator to promote and advertise programs.

  • Maintain budget oversight of program area, including but not limited to, negotiating class and instructor fees, prepare cost analyses of program goals and strategies, purchase and maintain equipment and materials.

  • Act as liaison with external stakeholders to establish and implement specialty programs, as needed.

  • Investigate and respond to customer inquiries and complaints and respond appropriately to emergencies situations.

  • Monitor resource allocation by maintaining program area supplies and equipment, evaluating and recommending budgetary needs for program area; act as liaison and process vendor and instructor payments.

  • Assist with report preparation related to departmental activities and other administrative tasks, as needed.

  • Acquire job specific certifications and training documentation related to job-specific program area and preschool.

  • Provide recommendations to leaders regarding continuous improvements and process efficiencies that improve customer service.

  • May represent the facility/program supervisor in their absence.

ADAPTED & INCLUSIVE PROGRAMMING

  • Responsible for developing, coordinating, implementing, promoting, and supervising recreation programming for individuals with physical, intellectual, and/or developmental disabilities.

  • Collaborate with Department program staff to create opportunities for individuals with physical, intellectual, and/or developmental disabilities to participate in all recreational programs, activities, and/or events hosted by Denton Parks and Recreation.

  • Serve as the department liaison for the City's Americans with Disabilities (ADA) Office, Inclusion Committee, and Committee on Persons with Disabilities.

  • Coordinate and implement department staff training programs focusing on ADA compliance, inclusion, and disability awareness.

  • Coordinate with Park Planning team on development of inclusive spaces throughout Denton parks and facilities; may participate, attend, and provide input during pre-design and at pre-construction meetings.

  • Receive ADA requests and Adapted Rec participant intake forms; maintain confidential information and documentation related to participant health and ADA requests according to applicable law, regulation, and City of Denton policy.

  • Complete inspection and maintenance of adaptive equipment before, during, and after use; notified leadership immediately of any equipment that is not able to be replaced or repaired.

  • Prepare analytical and statistical reports on operations, activities, and demographics of programs attendees for grant writing purposes.

SUPERVISORY/BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with selection,training,supervising, and evaluating staff; recommend assignment/assignment change, retention, discipline, and dismissal.

  • Assist with developing, managing, and monitoring budget; maintain accurate budget reporting; ensure that operations are cost-effective, and funds are managed wisely.

Job Requirements

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; and,
  • Six (6) years of recreation experience or related field; and,
  • One (1) year of supervisory experience; and,
  • If Adapted & Inclusive, one (1) year experience organizing and providing general guidance over the activities of individuals with physical, intellectual, and/or developmental disabilities; and,
  • For Adapted & Inclusive, if do not current possess, must obtain BlazeAmerica Certified Adaptive Recreation and Sports Specialist I & II or ability to obtain within three months of employment; and,
  • If aquatics, one (1) full summer season (May
  • August) as a certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor,

OR

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Recreation,TherapeuticRecreation or related field; and,
  • Two (2) years of recreation experience or related field; and,
  • One (1) year of supervisory experience; and,
  • If Adapted & Inclusive, one (1) year experience organizing and providing general guidance over the activities of individuals with physical, intellectual, and/or developmental disabilities; and,
  • For Adapted & Inclusive, if do not current possess, must obtain BlazeAmerica Certified Adaptive Recreation and Sports Specialist I & II or ability to obtain within three months of employment; and,
  • If aquatics, one (1) full summer season (May

  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.

  • Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws parks and recreation, as well as City of Denton policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of leisure, social, health and legal needs of individuals with disabilities at all age levels.

  • Knowledge of CPR/AED first aid procedures.

  • Knowledge of childhood development that supports recreational activities that are organized, age appropriate and maintain interest.

  • If Adapted & Inclusive: Knowledge of comprehension on assistive and adaptive equipment including use, maintenance, and market options.

  • Knowledge of principles and theories of inclusion, universal design, and accessibility.

  • Knowledge of the concepts and practices to integrate recreation programs for special needs population, training in behavior management, positive behavioral support as well as age appropriate development.

  • Skill in moderate problem solving; identifying moderate-to-complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

  • Skill at the intermediate level, working with Microsoft Office 365, and other software systems to complete work.

  • Skill in providing exceptional service to internal and external customers.

  • Ability to work independently to manage multiple work tasks while balancing competing priorities with attention to detail and in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.

  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure and confidentiality.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and written forms, for the needs of the audience.

  • Ability to prepare budget documentation and to monitor expenditures to implement fiscal control and maintain budget compliance.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must have and maintain a valid Class "C" Driver's License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class "C" driver's license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law)

  • Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification.

  • Must pass a physical examination.

  • Must be able to complete City of Denton Cash Handling class within 6 months of employment, and/or successfully complete the first available cash handling class.

  • Must attend and successfully complete the City's Defensive Driving Course (DDC) and Van training as soon as possible after employment, if required to drive City vehicle or personal vehicle for City business.

  • Must have or obtain Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult CPR, AED & First Aid Certification within 30 days of employment (online training is not valid).

  • For Aquatics, must have or obtain Red Cross Adult and Child CPR, AED & First Aid Certification within 30 days of employment (online training is not valid).

  • For Aquatics, must obtain a Lifeguard certification within 6 months of employment.

  • For fitness positions, must obtain a nationally recognized fitness certification (ACE, AFFA, ACSM, NASM, etc.) within six months of employment.

  • For Preschool Directors, must meet the Texas Department of Family and Protective Service (TXDFPS) Minimum Standards of Care for Child-Care Centers within 12 months of employment.

  • For Preschool positions, must be able to pass FBI fingerprinting and background check as required by TXDFPS childcare licensing.

  • For Adapted & Inclusive, must obtain BlazeAmerica Certified Adaptive Recreation and Sports Specialist I & II or ability to obtain within three months of employment.

  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment; ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.

  • Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.

  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.

  • Lifting: Occasional lifting of more than100 pounds;carryingmore than 50 pounds.

  • Environment: Works in an office setting and outside with exposure to inclement weather, noise, debris, odor, and chemicals; occasionally requires irregular and/or prolonged hours.

  • Travel: Travels to City of Denton buildings and professional meetings as required.

  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.Must be able to work overtime or outside of normal business hours, as required.
