The Actuary, Global Projects contributes to the development of enhanced short-term and long-term projection capabilities for the consolidated RGA enterprise. Develops and maintains systems and processes related to embedded value, economic capital, financial planning and budgeting, capital planning, tax planning, and asset/liability management. Interacts with other RGA departments and offices to ensure that department work products are portrayed correctly, understood, and completed in a timely fashion.

Responsibilities

  • Works to enhance the Company's projection and planning infrastructure.

  • Provides technical expertise with respect to embedded value, economic capital, and principle-based reserving.

  • Provides technical expertise with respect to relational databases and actuarial software.

  • Provides assistance to the business segments with respect to validating and managing their projection data.

  • Participates in the development and enhancement of underlying processes and recommends improvements.

  • Performs management duties including, but not limited to, hiring, training, evaluating, coaching, and disciplining direct reports. Fosters a positive and engaged work environment. Mentors associates and gives guidance on associate development.

  • Works to ensure that all lines of business and company risks have been modeled in a reasonable, accurate, and repeatable manner.

Requirements

Education and Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Math, Finance, Statistics, Actuarial Science, or a related field

  • FSA accreditation

  • 7+ years of actuarial experience in life insurance

Preferred:

  • MAAA accreditation

  • CFA, CERA, or other such financial risk management designation

  • Stochastic modeling and/or asset liability modeling experience

  • Experience in embedded value reporting and/or economic capital determination

Skills and Abilities

Required:

  • Advanced PC and technical skills, including database applications (Access, Oracle, SQL or equivalent technology), spreadsheets, statistical programs and actuarial software

  • Highly advanced oral and written communication skills, demonstrating the ability to convey business terminology that is meaningful and well received

  • Highly advanced level of investigative, analytical and problem solving skills

  • Ability to work independently and to work well within a team environment and participate in department projects Expert ability to balance detail with departmental goals/objectives

  • Advanced skills in customer relationship management and change management

  • Highly advanced ability to translate business needs and problems into viable/accepted solutions

  • Highly advanced ability to manage multiple projects and/or teams simultaneously

  • Highly advanced ability to liaise with individuals across a wide variety of operational, functional, and technical disciplines

  • Highly advanced persuasion and negotiation skills when working with internal/external customers.

  • Advanced interpersonal skills, demonstrating the ability to work effectively with different disciplines, including pricing, investments, accounting, systems, and administration.

  • Highly advanced ability to model various insurance products and reinsurance structures.

  • Highly advanced project management skills. Demonstrates an ability to evaluate project objectives and scope for feasibility and understanding.

  • Highly advanced level of people management skills, demonstrating the ability to lead, mentor, and develop associates; including the ability to delegate key areas of responsibility

  • Expert knowledge of life, health, and annuity products.

  • Expert knowledge of GAAP, Statutory, and Tax valuation and financial reporting.

Preferred:

  • Expertise in MoSes, TAS, VIPiTech and/or AXIS

  • Understanding of asset and liability modeling techniques

  • Ability to program in visual basic or equivalent

  • Reinsurance industry and product knowledge

The Associate Actuary - Global Projects performs valuation/financial reporting and analysis and project assistance. Contributes to the maintenance and enhancement of the financial forecasting infrastructure and analytic foundation across the segment by developing and maintaining actuarial assumptions, methods, models and processes used not only for valuation, but also to support unbiased planning, reporting, economic capital refinement, embedded value calculation, capital planning, cash flow testing, and other such uses. Responsibilities * Researches, develops, maintains, and/or reviews actuarial assumptions, methods and models. Provides internal guidance and documentation. * Performs detailed Statutory, Tax, and GAAP valuation work for assigned business, ensures these items are appropriately documented and posted, and assists with identifying changing requirements and adapting to maintain compliance. * Develops unbiased projections for financial planning and analysis and assists with communication of financial analytics and results in terms of major drivers of variance. * Serves as a liaison with other valuation, pricing, administration, systems, accounting, audit, and finance associates. * Provides oversight and direction to junior actuarial/financial associates in the department. If assigned performs supervisory duties including, but not limited to, hiring, training, evaluating, coaching, and disciplining direct reports. Fosters a positive and engaged work environment. Mentors associates and gives guidance on associate development. * Performs valuation work and ad-hoc department projects as needed and called upon.
