Our 10-week Summer Internship Program is an ideal way for both undergraduate and graduate students to gain real-life work experience while learning what a career at Blue Shield of California can offer. Interns work on real-world projects and initiatives while being immersed in all aspects of our business. From interacting with senior leadership to visiting a neighborhood health clinic, interns will build a better understanding of the diversity and complexities of working in the dynamic world of healthcare. Our goal is to build a talent pipeline that will help us grow our company into the future.

Reporting to the large group pricing team, the role of the summer intern is critical to the success of Blue Shield of California and the Actuarial department in realizing its goals and objectives. This individual will play a key role as part of the large group ricing team in delivering and collaborating on all aspects of pricing and forecasting related activities.

Specifically, the summer intern role will be accountable for:

  • Providing support to custom pricing process by calculating benefit impact as a result of key benefit changes; it may also involve developing and deploying custom pricing tools for underwriters or other actuarial analysts for common benefit change requests

  • Providing support to improve and fine tune our current forecasting process, including but not limited to developing key metrics to calculate impacts by membership mix, emerging experience, etc.

  • Providing support to develop statistical models to measure probability of future costs deviating from expectations and calculate the financial outcome

  • No prior work experience is required; minimum of 3.0 GPA

  • In the process of pursuing Bachelor's degree; emphasis on mathematics, statistics or actuarial science preferred;

  • Showing serious Interest in becoming an actuary; passed at least one actuarial exam a bonus

Candidate Profile and Requirements:

  • Experience working among a team preferred (even if it's a school project); Experience leading a team/project to success a bonus

  • Basic experience with Microsoft product (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) required; experience with statistical/data tools (SAS, R, Python, etc.) a bonus

Actuarial Consultant - Health The Health & Benefits (H&B) Actuarial Consultant will provide accurate and timely data and financial analysis on various actuarial/financial projects for pricing of medical, dental, life and disability programs. Assists in basic actuarial/quantitative analysis projects under the guidance of senior project team members in order to assess and calculate costs, rates, risks and trends associated with underwriting health and welfare insurance, brokering contracts, or projecting health care related costs. * Gathers, organizes, tests, and reviews client or vendor data for accuracy, validity, and reasonableness, and to identify any discrepancies. * Performs basic analyses and cost projections by using or modifying existing products, tools, and pricing models in Excel, SAS, and other software, with oversight and feedback from senior project team members. * Assists senior project team members in preparing reports for data trend analyses in order to summarize findings and recommend a strategy, solution, or plan design to the client. * Participates in development of company's intellectual capital in order to develop knowledge of health insurance actuarial services and products. * Researches, analyzes, and reviews industry, regulatory, and legislative trends for calculating risk, liability, and cost for client or government reports. * Price and evaluation of consumerism plans (high deductible health plans with provisions to create greater consumer awareness) using Mercer's internal pricing model to compare designs; results are typically presented to client as part of a strategy or plan design discussion * Analyze cost drivers by reviewing client's cost/utilization data and looking for year-over-year trends or comparisons to external benchmarks using data provided from client's vendor reports or raw data from external databases; key results are summarized and presented to client to help understand cost drivers and help modify plan design * Project retiree medical costs by entering the client's retiree cost and enrollment data for both pre-Medicare and post-Medicare; results are used by Retirement to develop retiree medical liabilities used by the client and their auditors for accounting purposes * Estimate the impact of Medicare part D legislation by entering retiree prescription drug data into Mercer's Part D pricing model and performing tests to determine whether a federal government subsidy is available to the client; results are included in a report to the client documenting the assumptions and results of the testing * Perform analyses for larger, more complex clients, including more in-depth analysis for complex situations that may require additional research or discussion with Mercer subject matter experts * Oversee the financial analysis work a more junior analyst * Perform basic cost projections by entering the client's cost and enrollment data into an Excel spreadsheet and projecting costs for the next plan year * Analyze vendor renewals by checking carrier or vendor's plan rates for reasonableness and by analyzing claims and enrollment data, trend rates, administrative expenses and other charges * Price medical and prescription drug plan designs by entering plan design information into Mercer's internal pricing model to develop the relative cost differences between plan designs, in order to compare the client's current plan to alternative designs * Participate in client calls and meetings as appropriate * Gather necessary data from the vendor or client; review to ensure it is complete, accurate and reasonable; and prepare data in a particular template or format for use in basic or advanced financial analyses or valuations.
