The Actuarial Analyst 1, General provides actuarial support across a broad range of actuarial and business needs for specific product lines. The Actuarial Analyst 1, General work assignments are often straightforward and of moderate complexity.


The Actuarial Analyst 1, General may be responsible for any combination of valuation, pricing, analytics, forecasting, risk, compliance, and operations. Understands own work area professional concepts/standards, regulations, strategies and operating standards. Makes decisions regarding own work approach/priorities, and follows direction. Work is managed and often guided by precedent and/or documented procedures/regulations/professional standards with some interpretation.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Successful completion of at least 1 actuarial exam (preferably 3 or more)

  • Actuarial internship or full time actuarial experience, will consider other transferable work experience

  • Meets requirements for Humana's Actuarial Professional Development Program (APDP)

  • Strong communication skills

  • Willingness to relocate to Louisville, KY, Chicago, IL, Green Bay, WI or Milwaukee, WI. The majority of new openings will be in Louisville, KY.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 1-2 years of full time actuarial experience or actuarial internships

  • Experience in the health care industry

  • Strong skills in Excel, SQL, and/or SAS

  • Master's degree

Actuarial Analyst / Analyst II (Job Family) – Indianapolis, IN (Preferred Location) Location: Preferred location is Indianapolis, IN Alternate Locations: St. Louis, MO; Atlanta, GA; Mason, OH; Virginia Beach, VA; Louisville, KY; Pewaukee, WI; Richmond, VA Please Note: This position may be filled at either the Actuarial Analyst or Actuarial Analyst II level. Manager will determine level based upon the selected applicant's skillset relative to the qualifications listed for this position. The Actuarial Analyst assists in the determination of reserves. Analyzes, develops and validates statistical data. Primary duties may include, but are not limited to: * Support the month-end close process and ensure the accuracy of booked reserves. * Prepare and coordinate month-end financial reporting. * Review seasonality statistics for the state to be used in the forecast. * Provide support and analysis for internal and external audit requests, including the annual audit. * Produce quarterly reporting, including statutory and GAAP information. * Assist with Actuarial opinion and memoranda work annually. Actuarial Analyst: * Under limited supervision, applies the appropriate actuarial analytical tools to the data and performs preliminary actuarial and statistical analysis. * Updates actuarial pricing, valuation and forecasting models as directed. * Refines and collects appropriate data for actuarial analysis and ensures its reasonableness and accuracy by coordination within the division. Actuarial Analyst II: * Completes projects and performs complex actuarial studies for national account ASO customers. * Obtains, verifies, analyzes and models data including risk reporting and forecasting. * Calculates monthly claims liability reserves, develops merit rating factors and prepares Department of Insurance annual statement exhibits. * Run ad-hoc reports/analysis. Qualifications for Actuarial Analyst: * Requires a BS/BA degree; * Required to have passed at least one Society of Actuaries (SOA) or Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) actuarial exam; or any combination of education and experience, which would provide an equivalent background. * Microsoft office preferred. * Actuarial Internship preferred. Qualifications for Actuarial Analyst II: * Requires BS/BA degree; * At least 1 year related experience; or any combination of education and experience, which would provide an equivalent background. * Strong analytical skills required. * Strong written and oral communication skills required. * Proficient in MS Excel required. * Required to have passed at least three Society of Actuaries (SOA) or Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) actuarial exams.
