The ACT Support Specialist serves as support to the ACT Program, working closely with staff to assist individuals with developmental and other disabilities in developing skills necessary to successfully transition to adult life. The Support Specialist assists in providing students with disabilities with on-site support, supervision and training when required.  Assists students in becoming active, wage-earning members of the workforce by generating positive employment opportunities and ongoing support.  The Support Specialist will work primarily at the Together Café at the Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine and will also perform many clerical functions for the ACT main office.

Travel will be required, as this position will work on both the Gloucester and Cumberland Campuses.

  • Responsible for initial creation of prospect, applicant, and student records in the ACT electronic information system.

  • Processes data entry of all types of admission applications (including electronic) and participation forms.

  • Assists with general office functions, including but not limited to, in-person, on-line and telephone requests; assisting students at the admissions counter; filing of student applications and documents; bulk mailings, completing mail merges, and routine office procedures.

  • Accurately responds to inquiry contacts and questions regarding the application process and assisting students in understanding the next step.

  • Assists with all aspects of record-keeping and submission of billing and other information to state agencies as directed by the ACT Program Manager.

  • Ensures that patrons of the café receive outstanding service by providing a friendly environment which includes greeting/serving customers, maintaining appropriate health and safety standards, having working knowledge of products, and demonstrating excellent business management skills.

  • Works closely with RCSJ partners to ensure that the café is appropriately stocked and operated per the partner's and RCSJ's instructions.

  • Provides assistance to and oversight of students working at the café while working to enhance their communication skills, technology proficiency, workforce readiness skills, civics, activities of daily living skills, healthy relationships and community-based interaction.

  • Organizes and plans tasks and activities for students who are working at the café.

  • Participates in the development of evaluation tools, and long and short-term objectives associated with student achievement and outcomes.

  • Documents and maintains records of student performance as required by Rowan College of South Jersey and state and local agencies, as necessary.

  • Demonstrates organization skills including differentiating tasks based on student need and presentation strategies to ensure student engagement.

  • Provides employment training and support for individuals with disabilities at the worksite.

  • Attends meetings and programs pertaining to ACT program and students, as necessary.

  • Communicates and collaborates regularly with the Executive Director and ACT Program Manager, fellow instructors, and other staff to discuss progress, questions, and concerns as it pertains to student performance.

  • Ensures compliance with all policies and procedures related to this assignment.

  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

  • Associate degree required; Bachelor's Degree preferred

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience working with individuals with developmental and other disabilities, preferred

  • Experience in food-service related to the assignment preferred

  • ServSafe certified, or the ability to become ServSafe certified

  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Access

  • Experience with or ability to learn a food-service point-of-sale system

  • Ability to work with discretion, maintain confidentiality, and exercise sound independent judgment

  • Possess the ability to work well and communicate effectively with prospective and current students, staff, faculty, administration, and colleagues and community partners

  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff and a commitment to a student-centered environment

  • A strong commitment and knowledge of a comprehensive community college philosophy and a student-centered learning environment.
