Overview
An Accounts Receivable Specialist is responsible for performing specialized clerical and accounting work involving compilation, maintenance, and verification of diverse statistical, fiscal, and bookkeeping records and accounts. Work detail varies considerably according to the section assigned. Specific routines must be learned on the job through daily association. Accounts Receivable Specialists are expected to exercise independent judgment to solve most problems that arise within their assigned work. Performance is reviewed by general observation, and through periodic audit of records and transactions, by the Accounts Receivable Supervisor.
Representative Duties

Maintains receivable sub-ledger files, receipt books, and various other accounting records in accordance with records retention guidelines for governmental agencies.
Examines financial records for accuracy and thoroughness according to prescribed standards.
Prepares and/or posts entries to subsidiary ledgers, assists in validation, and prepares statistical statements and reports.
Performs pre-audit functions for all transactions.
Interacts with vendors, citizens, and other departmental personnel in relation to assigned duties.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
TRAINING AND EDUCATION
Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Two years experience in accounting/bookkeeping.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND/OR SKILLS
Possess and maintain reliable work habits.
Knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting principles and practices, and standard office practices, methods and procedures.
Capacity to properly apply bookkeeping and accounting principles both in actual work and in review of same.
Ability to use a computer terminal for data entry with a high degree of accuracy.
Familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet software.
Ability to reliably initiate and complete work assignments/projects.
Ability to function either independently or within a team, depending upon the work assignment/project.
Ability to effectively and courteously deal with the public, whether in person, in writing, or over the telephone.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, managers, and the public.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with peers, managers, and the public, on both individual and group levels.
