Job Summary

The Finance-Sponsored Programs office is looking to hire an Accounting Unit Supervisor to manage a team in the Reporting area. The position will report to the Reporting Operations Manager and will supervise staff and business processes that serve Sponsored Programs and other UM customers, as well as external sponsoring entities. The supervisor should provide visible and effective leadership to their staff in a manner that ensures operational excellence and quality customer service.

The supervisor is responsible for establishing the objectives to be achieved by the team and managing the team's daily operational performance. In partnership with Sponsored Programs senior leadership, this individual provides direction to their staff and is expected to uphold a culture that encourages continuous improvement and University compliance. The supervisor will regularly coach and develop his/her staff to assure a team-based and collaborative environment.

Responsibilities*

  • Supervise and train 3-5 accountants and 1-2 interns

  • Review financial status report(s) to ensure compliance with University and sponsor requirements, regulations and restrictions

  • Ensure projects are closed on a monthly basis to expedite inactivation within the specified internal due date

  • Build a positive relationship with various customers and articulate best practices and policies in an effective manner in efforts to streamline the reporting and closeout process

  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives, system enhancements, policy changes, and other special projects on an ad hoc basis

Required Qualifications*

  • Candidate must have

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field (minimum 8 accounting courses).

  • Candidate must be highly motivated and enjoy working in a fast paced, production environment.

  • Candidate should possess strong interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively communicate and work with a variety of individuals and units.

  • Candidates must be detail oriented, organized, and have the ability to prioritize multiple projects and work independently.Candidate should have 3-5 years of experience in sponsored research accounting, Sponsored Programs office experience preferred.Candidate should be proficient working with Microsoft Office Suite, Business Objects, eRPM and M-Pathways/PeopleSoft.

Desired Qualifications*

  • 1-3 years of supervisory experience or demonstrated high level performance as a team lead
