Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Position Summary

INTERNAL ONLY: Internal Posting for Current UNC-Chapel Hill Permanent Employees, Time-Limited Employees, Temporary Employees (Directly Hired by UNC-Chapel Hill - Not Employed by a Third-Party Staffing Agency), University Temporary Services (UTS) Employees (Employed by UNC-Chapel Hill) and Layoff Priority Candidates of UNC-Chapel Hill.

The School of Social Work seeks an Accounting Technician who will be responsible for contract and grant administration experience in a university research environment. The Accounting Technician role will include research administration and financial management.

Research Administration- Pre-award budget and budget development, proposal development and processing, monitoring and preparation of personnel actions, post-award reconciliation of expenditures, preparation of financial reports for PI's, interpreting allowable expenses, monitoring, and approving account transactions, monitoring project closeout and processing personnel and non-personnel cost transfers.

Financial Management- Projection of salary and fringe benefits as determined by approved award budget, processing salary source changes and lump sum payments, establish and maintain internal account ledgers, reconciliation of monthly reports for each account, taking necessary measures to correct errors and changes such as budget revisions, budget amendments, and account adjustments, maintain calendar schedule of agency's required reporting deadlines, meet with Assistant Dean and/or Research Manager as needed, meet with Principal Investigators and/or Project Managers regularly and as needed to ensure projects are on track, work closely with administrative support staff to assist with questions or problems related to processing transactions.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Ability to organize, prioritize and work under deadline pressure.

  • Must be team oriented with strong oral and written communication skills and excellent customer service skills.

  • Experience with contracts and grants.

  • Experience with Excel, and familiarity with Adobe PDF documents.

  • Strong computer skills.

  • The candidate must have a sound knowledge of accounting fundamentals and excellent analytical skills. This position requires extreme attention to detail, excellent organization skills, and ability to problem-solve.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Experience with UNC internal systems like ConnectCarolina and RAMSeS preferred.

  • All Microsoft Office 365 programs.
