The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.

Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in

Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.

Job Duties

This position is located in the School of Dental Medicine at Ross Hall in Greenville, NC and is responsible for Patient Accounts. Patient Accounts must be monitored frequently to ensure balances are kept current and payments are allocated correctly. This individual must be knowledgeable regarding all areas of dental patient accounts. This includes registration, insurance processing, claims processing, and payment processing. This person will need to identify and recognize patient account errors, clinical errors, or insurance errors and refer those questions or problem areas to higher levels.This position is responsible for posting all mailed in or electronic payments remitted to lockbox for the School of Dental Medicine. Payments will be derived from self-pays, insurance companies, and other outside agencies and may be in the form of checks, money orders, credit cards, or ACH. Most payments will be manually posted. Um. In depth research may be required if the incorrect insurance information or patient information was provided.

This individual will be challenged with the various insurances concerning billing procedures and reimbursement. This position will have to be able to recognize payment variances with different insurance carriers in order to accurately allocate insurance payments and inform Patient Care Representatives at the clinic level of changes that will affect dental patient accounts and/or payment plans. This involves analyzing multiple screens to obtain the correct information about payments, partial payments, missed payments, and cancelled

Um, insurance verifications, explanation of benefits (EOB's), and the workings of Medicaid and Medicare. The coordination of various applications, regulations and protocols is necessary to accurately process information. The position requires the ability to make decisions and problem solve for the appropriate utilization and assimilation of services and programs, as well as a complete understanding and

knowledge of policy and procedures in order to determine the best results or resolution of situations. This position will analyze credit balances to determine when refunds are necessary. Reports and documentation will be submitted to a higher level for final disposition. The reports must be clear and accurate for audit purposes. Before refunds may be requested, credit balances must be researched and analyzed to determine if money can be moved to other charges or other patient accounts. DENTAL MEDICINE SUPPORT POSITION - NOT SUBJECT TO STATE HUMAN RESOURCES ACT.

Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP) which offers matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b. 457). This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (TSERS). Minimum Education/Experience

High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

License or Certification required by statute or regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Medical or dental billing and reimbursement experience preferred.

Knowledge of insurance carrier billing procedures and protocols preferred

Knowledge of federally funded programs such as Medicaid and Medicare, and coding to facilitate claims payment is a plus.

Knowledge of the Dental Management Software program axi
