The Department of Corrections, Division of Administration & Support, is recruiting for an Accounting Technician 3 position, located in Juneau, Alaska.

What you will be doing:

Under general direction from the Inmate Banking Manager, perform the full range of internal audit functions including analysis and recommendations of agency operations and internal, management, fiscal and accounting controls over all inmate financials.  Responsible for providing training and oversight for all inmate banking functions, and with the Inmate Banking Manager, perform and prepare audit findings/recommendations.  Oversee all inmate funds and inmate welfare funds under the responsibility of the Department.

The working environment you can expect:

We have staff located in Juneau, Anchorage, Palmer, and Kenai and this position is located in Juneau.   The Juneau office is located in the Douglas Island Building with ample parking.

 The work environment is collaborative and customer service oriented.   Our Inmate Banking Team works as a tight knit group that values each other's contributions.  This position will interface daily with a variety of people, including staff, field offices, other managers, directors, and executives.

Who we are looking for:

To be successful in the position, the successful candidate will need the following core competencies:

  • Working knowledge of techniques and methods used in reconciliation of accounts and auditing.

  • Some knowledge of governmental accounting principles, fund accounting and procedures.

  • Skill in searching for, selecting, and compiling/summarizing data and information.

  • Skill in identifying discrepancies or inaccuracies in data and making corrections.

  • Skill in collecting and organizing accounting data, interpreting its significance, preparing accurate reports, and making process recommendations.

Two years of technical level accounting or bookkeeping experience, of which at least one year was at the full-proficiency level.

Substitutions:

Certification as an Accounting Technician from an accredited college will substitute for one year of the required experience at the non-full-proficiency level.

Post secondary education from an accredited college will substitute for up to one year of the required experience at the non-full-proficiency level (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) if it includes at least 6 semester/8 quarter hours in Accounting.

Post secondary education from an accredited college will substitute for the required two years of experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) if it includes at least 9 semester/12 quarter hours at or above the 200 level in Accounting.

An associate's degree in Accounting or Business Administration from an accredited college will substitute for the required two years of experience if it includes at least 6 semester/8 quarter hours at or above the 200 level in Accounting.

EDUCATION

If post-secondary education is required to meet the minimum qualifications, you must fill in the Education section of the application. If you have not obtained a degree, please indicate the number of units completed.

Copies of transcripts are required to verify educational credentials if used to meet the minimum qualifications for a position. Transcripts can be attached at the time of application or provided at the time of interview.

Education completed in foreign colleges, universities, or high schools may be used to meet the minimum qualifications listed above. If utilizing this education, you must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value, or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the post-secondary institution or high school.  It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

Please be aware - this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN)/Alaska Corrections Offender Management System (ACOMS).  A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN/ACOMS.  DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice.  Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.
