POSITION: Accounting Supervisor

LOCATION: Irving or San Antonio

REPORTS TO: Sr Director of Finance

(Full-time, benefits-eligible, immediate opening)

Position Summary

The Accounting Supervisor will be responsible for timely and high-quality closing of the monthly general ledger and preparation of monthly financial statements; Ensuring accounting is done in compliance with GAAP; Ensuring that proper internal controls are in place; Preparing regular reporting on capital projects to ensure that management is aware of the status; Ensure that all required account reconciliations are completed and approved in a timely fashion and that all reconciling items are properly addressed; Oversee treasury activity related to financing and capital projects; Provide expert accounting knowledge, skills, and support to the GH Texas organization.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all the accounting for Great Hearts' Texas organization, including transactions with individual schools, construction funds, and fixed assets, payroll/benefits journal entries, bank and sub-ledger reconciliations to general ledger account balances (e.g., pledges receivable), general ledger management and monthly accounting close.

  • Oversee the monthly closing to ensure that closings are done timely, in a high-quality manner, and in accordance with GAAP.

  • Prepare monthly financial reports in conjunction with other members of the finance team and ensure that reports are issued timely, in a high-quality manner and that the information is in a format that makes it easy for users of the financial statements to understand the results and determine the actions that should be taken.

  • Ensure all account reconciliations are done in a timely manner, including the proper support for the reconciliation, the proper approvals, and timely resolution of reconciling items.

  • Collaborate with AP/Payroll manager to ensure invoice coding is correct and staff is classified correctly for financial reporting.

  • Collaborate with AP on Credit Card and PEX card entry into the accounting system.

  • Ensure accounting practices comply with GAAP.

  • Manage consolidated and standalone financial reporting. (Includes Year End Financials and Form 990)

  • Work with external auditors and provide necessary supporting schedules for reviews, audits, and tax filings.

  • Suggest/implement system/process improvements to ensure adequate internal controls and efficient processes while enhancing the way the organization views/disseminates information.

  • Work to create better insight into key performance indicators by providing information sooner, in an improved format or through providing additional commentary.

  • Work closely with other team members on various research and analytic projects.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Competencies and Strengths

The Corporate Accounting Supervisor position offers an exceptional opportunity to develop professionally and contribute meaningfully to a unique organization which is changing K-12 education in this country. While experience in education is not a requirement, Great Hearts is seeking people who are passionate and committed to K-12 education reform. Similarly, experience working within a high-growth, geographically dispersed, multi-unit operating environment is also a plus.

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive accounting/finance work experience, preferably including education-related industry and/or multi-unit service operations experience.

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting is required.

  • Prior audit experience preferred.

  • Must have excellent communication (written and verbal) and people skills with the ability to build strong relationships with all stakeholders.

  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Proficiency with Blackbaud Financial Edge, Concur, and Adaptive budgeting software preferred.

  • Demonstrated professionalism and ability to take ownership and successfully lead projects.

  • Strong analytical thinking and creative problem-solving skills with the ability to be able to see the big picture but also to understand the details.

  • Ability to organize work and data while maximizing the efficient and effective use of all resources available.

  • Ability to lead others through intelligence, charisma, humor, moral integrity, and example.

  • Strong working knowledge of US GAAP in a non-profit setting

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field required; Master's degree and/or CPA strongly preferred.

  • Provide excellent customer service and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Comfortable with conducting presentations in front of key stakeholders, board members, etc.
