The Patient Account Specialist is supervised by the Director of Patient Accounts. Position responsibilities include posting client payments to the proper account, client and third-party billing and collection activities. This position is expected to complete routine assignments independently within the limitations of the Agency's policies and procedures.

Essential Functions:

  • Review AR Aging and collect outstanding balances.

  • Make necessary corrections to process claim denials and/or rejections for payment.

  • Post client self-pay payments to client accounts.

  • Work with MHS staff to correct errors preventing billing.

  • Provide MHS with a listing of clients with high outstanding balances for possible reassignment.

  • Review client and third-party billings for accuracy. Make necessary corrections in the EHR.

  • Upon request, provide account feedback, third party payer and department policy information.

  • Update the EHR with new insurance and demographic information on current clients as necessary.

  • Receive incoming clients and third-party inquiries via phone, mail/email, or patient portal. Respond to inquiries in the time frame allotted in department policy.

  • Identify consistent reasons for third party claim denials. Notify the Director of Patient Accounts and suggest procedural changes, which would avoid future denials.

  • Create finance entries as needed in the EHR as needed to document client/staff/insurance communications.

  • Keep abreast of third-party payer requirements.

  • Notify the Director of Patient Accounts of consistent and re-occurring problems in routine processing, which need addressing. Suggest alternative solutions to the problems.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Patient Accounts.

Minimum Education, Licensure, and Work Experience Required:

  • High school graduate

  • Minimum of three years' experience processing third party billings and collecting appropriate reimbursement. Knowledge of third-party billing and reimbursement requirements.

  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office with advanced knowledge of Excel

  • Experience with electronic billing.
