Primary Job Duties to include but are not limited to the following:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the accounting department proactively, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, job costing, project accounting, general ledger, payroll, and financial reporting

  • Hold self and others accountable to responsibilities while regularly providing and receiving specific, actionable feedback to encourage continuous improvement

  • Delegate responsibilities appropriately to accounting team for growth opportunities while striving for team efficiencies

  • Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, project cost reports, and other construction-specific reports, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards and industry regulations

  • Help lead the successful and timely completion of annual financial audits, insurance audits, tax filings, and miscellaneous registrations

  • Implement and maintain effective internal controls and accounting policies to safeguard the organization's assets and ensure compliance with construction industry standards

  • Analyze financial data, identify cost trends, and provide recommendations to the leadership team on project budgeting, cost control measures, and strategic financial decisions

  • Prepare and present financial reports to the management and other stakeholders, including job-specific profitability analysis and cash flow projections

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards related to financial reporting, payroll, and construction accounting practices

  • Aid in developing the accounting team, including interviewing, training, and performance management input, with a focus on construction-specific skills and knowledge

  • Collaborate with project managers, estimators, and other department heads to provide and obtain financial guidance and support on construction projects, budgets, and business initiatives

  • Stay up to date with changes in construction accounting regulations, best practices, and industry trends, and implement necessary changes within the organization

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • This position has no supervisory responsibility.

Work Environment:

  • This job operates mainly in an office environment but will require visits to construction sites.

Physical Demands:

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that an employee must meet to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit and stand for long periods of time. The employee must occasionally lift, move, or drag up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to safely navigate active construction sites.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work:

  • This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., 40 hours per week. Occasional overtime may be required.

Travel:

  • This position will be required to travel to the five company area offices as well as job sites throughout Virginia and North Carolina as needed to collaborate with project teams and other departments.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Minimum 4-5 years of experience in accounting, preferably in construction or a similar industry with heavy cost accounting

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Construction Management, CPA (Certified Public Accountant), or CCIFP (Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional) certification

  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience processing payroll, preferably in the construction industry with exposure to Davis-Bacon/prevailing wages

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  • Thorough understanding of construction accounting principles, job costing, and project-based reporting

  • Excellent knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and financial reporting standards, as well as construction-specific regulations

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills

  • Proficient in using construction accounting software and other financial management tools as well as project management platforms

  • Excellent leadership and team-building skills, with the ability to motivate and help develop a high-performing accounting team

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present financial information to non-financial stakeholders

  • Familiarity with construction processes and various positions within the civil construction industry

  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly in Excel

  • Experience with SQL, PowerQuery, and PowerBi a plus

  • Experience with Vista by Viewpoint ERP system a plus

  • Ability to receive and provide constructive feedback in a professional manner

  • Detail-oriented and organized

Work Authorization / Security Clearance:

  • Employee must be eligible to work in the United States

  • Drug screen is required prior to employment and further drug screens may be administered at random

  • A background check will be required

  • A confidentiality agreement may be required

  • Further clearance may be required by clients (i.e., government or military site access)
