Job Description Job Description Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc. is one of the largest human services providers in California that operates a variety of programs to serve the poor and strives to find permanent solutions to crisis situations by offering clients the tools and resources needed to achieve greater self-reliance and stability in their lives. The person in this role assists the Controller in providing accountability for Agency’s financial operations.

They will direct and supervise consolidation of accounting data and preparation of statements for management information. Responsible for managing the Agency’s general accounting activities. Participates in development and implementation of Agency’s financial and accounting goals, objective, policies and procedures.

Develops, implements and maintains accounting systems, policies and procedures. Compiles and analyzes accounting data for Agency and prepares reports for the Agency, the government and the Agency’s auditors. Supervises accounting staff.

May supervise the work of employees and/or volunteers. Responsibilities: Participates in development and implementation of Catholic Charities’ financial and accounting goals, objectives, policies, and procedures. Ensures that accounting and tax records and reports are accurate through effective recording, verification, and processing of data.

Develops and revises Catholic Charities’ accounting policies and procedures. Provides management with periodic reports of the department’s progress. Assists in the development and implementation of new procedures and features to enhance the workflow of the department.

Reviews and approves journal entries before posting into the general ledger and monitors its completeness before closing. Monitors, reviews and analyzes revenue and expenses and balance sheet accounts to ensure that the general ledger and sub ledgers are correct and up-to-date. Prepares various quarterly and monthly financial statements, reports, and analyses for management.

Ensures an accurate and timely monthly and year end close. Coordinates annual financial and Single Act audits with external auditors. Conducts internal contract compliance reviews of the different programs included in the annual Single Audit.

Conducts internal control reviews and audit checks on different programs as needed. Advises staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions. Keeps confidential records in a secure location and monitors access to these areas.

Establishes effective systems for records retention and ensures that all record retention schedules conform to federal, state and local requirements. Develops precise job expectations, establishes realistic work demands and ensures cost-efficient assignments of personnel. Motivates subordinates to exert the effort necessary to attain organizational goals and gives constant encouragement and constructive suggestions to assigned personnel.

Delegate work to assigned people for maximum time effectiveness and meet all deadlines set. Works with management in the screening and assessing of job applicants when fulfilling a job requirement in the department. Provide training to new and existing staff as needed.

Instructs and provides trainings to program staff on accounting-related methods and procedures. Handle personnel issues relating to staff conflicts, absenteeism, performance issues, etc. Responds to phone calls, writes letters, memos and reports that command attention, achieve results, and effectively and efficiently handle correspondence.

Plan, organize and complete accounting-related projects as required or needed. Performs related duties as required. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with CPA certification or Master’s degree in Accounting.

Four to five years of accounting experience in preferably a non-profit organization. Develop, revise, and install accounting systems and procedures. Prepare and present varied financial statements, reports, and analyses.

Maintain accurate, orderly financial and statistical records. Direct, evaluate, and train the work of assigned personnel. Communicate effectively in written and oral form.

Develop and maintain effective working relationships. Evaluate and determine project priorities. Use independent judgment and initiative.

Handle public contact effectively. Plan short- and long-range activities. Analyze and resolve problems.

Organize and direct several activities. Analyze and evaluate information. Principles, practices, and methods of modern finance and financial administration, including accounting, auditing, budgeting, and reporting.
