What you'll do

During these paid internships, interns will work full time while enhancing and applying their accounting skills and developing professionally. Once a candidate is selected for this program, they will be placed in one of the following business areas within the Accounting Community or Finance at Principal. There are opportunities within Retirement and Income Solutions, Principal Global Investors, U.S. Insurance Solutions, or Corporate and other supporting services.

Each intern opportunity will differ based on the needs of the business area. Generally, interns will be exposed to and be responsible for:

  • Preparing internal or external financial reports and/or tax returns

  • Participating in the financial statement close process

  • Testing and documentation of internal controls for SOX compliance

  • Variance and trend analysis

  • Assistance in preparation of budgets and/or forecasts

  • Assistance with projects


  • Working towards or have a bachelor's or graduate level degree in Accounting or Finance.

  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.

  • Intermediate understanding of accounting concepts.

  • 6 or more hours of accounting or finance major coursework completed by the start of the internship.

  • Intermediate Excel skills.

  • Meaningful involvement with community or school organizations and/or have work experience.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Double major in Accounting and Finance or technology related degree.

  • Minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA.

  • Advanced understanding of accounting concepts.

  • Advanced Excel skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership with community organizations and/or through work experience.

To support retail we must continuously review our supply chain practices to ensure we are operating as efficiently as possible while maintaining excellent customer service to our stores and ultimately our customers. We have openings for interns to assist Hy-Vee Inc. in the logistics and warehouse operations. The positions will be located within our two distribution centers in Chariton and Cherokee, Iowa as well as our subsidiaries: Perishable Distributors of Iowa located in Ankeny, Iowa; Florist Distributing, Inc. located in Des Moines, Iowa; D&D Foods, Inc. located in Omaha, Nebraska. The timeframe is approximately May 11, 2020 to August 7, 2020. This Monday through Friday opportunity will be 40 hours per week. Primary Responsibilities: * Successful candidates will work with management and company employees to learn daily processes within Hy-Vee's transportation department. * Such processes include: preparation of transportation reports, analyzing efficiency of routes, implementing cross dock processes, working with inbound freight, managing and improving process of relay trips between the three distribution centers and hiring trucking companies to deliver inbound product to the warehouses. * Responsibilities will be similar to what is expected of an entry-level transportation professional. * The internship will include learning daily processes needed to successfully service customers with the expectation of contributing new ideas in the form of a final presentation or paper at the conclusion of the internship.
