The Accountant is part of the Accounting team with a focus on ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of the General Ledger. The role will leverage GAAP knowledge, compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley internal controls, attention to detail, and ability to improve or modify processes to support company initiatives. This position reports to the Accounting Manager and works closely with Financial Planning and Analysis, internal and external auditors, and partners within the organization on accounting reporting, analysis, and processes.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Perform accounting functions such as calculating and entering journal entries, reconciling General Ledger accounts, maintaining schedules, providing audit support, and explaining variances to forecasts.
Maintain and follow SOX documentation for key controls and procedures.
Specific areas of focus may include: Revenue, receivables, liabilities, faculty pay, and bank reconciliations.
Work with internal and external auditors on requests and questions.
Assist in other special projects as needed.
Ability to apply GAAP to accounting responsibilities.
Detail-oriented: ability to dive into data and analyze.
Strong computer skills, primarily in supporting financial systems. PeopleSoft experience and advanced Excel skills are preferred.
Drive towards accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
Strong verbal and written communication skills: ability to convey complex ideas and information clearly and persuasively to different audiences.
Adaptable to a fast-paced environment, frequently-changing processes, and complex software applications.
Bachelor's degree required in accounting, business, or related field.
Associate's degree with considerable experience considered.
Must be able to travel 5% of time.
Must be able to lift 5 lbs.
Typical office setting.
Mobility within the office including movement from floor to floor.
Travel via plane, car, and metro may be required to perform this job.
Must be able to work more than 40 hours per week when business needs warrant.
Access information using a computer.
Effectively communicate, both up and down the management chain.

Strong mental acuity.
