Incumbent serves as Accountant for Plant Accounting in General Accounting ---a division of Business and Financial Services. This position is the liaison and control point with University of California Office of the President (UCOP) and campus departments for the accounting and fiscal management of the Plant Funds accounting area. Incumbent exercises independent judgment in reviewing and analyzing complex plant ledger activity, establishing Chart of Account (COA) elements, preparing appropriate journals, performing complex reconciliations, and monitoring externally financed projects.

Policy interpretation and participates in decision-making in fulfilling the requirements of GASB 33, 34 and 35. Responsible for recording debt service, depreciation expense, fiscal closing entries, semi-annual capitalization of buildings and structures, general improvements, infrastructures, libraries, rare books, software and other assets from current and plant funds. Prepares selected annual plant financial statements and specialized reporting for OP and campus publications.

Fiscal closing is a critical business period during which vacation requests may not be approved and alternate schedules may revert to standard work schedules.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate degree in related area or Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of automated accounting systems, including the ability to analyze functionality.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and summarize complex accounting data, perform complex reconciliations, prepare financial statements and resolve complex accounting problems.

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

  • Working knowledge of financial transactions and systems, as well as related policy, accounting, and regulatory compliance requirements.

  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of accounting principles, theory and practice; balance sheet accounts and principle of reconciliation.

  • Proficient in MS Office suite applications; specifically Excel, Word, Access or related software.

Preferred

  • Graduation from college with a major in accounting or finance and two years of experience in accounting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
