Job Summary:

This position is responsible for recording and reconciling the financial results for various Markel reporting segments, divisions, and insurance companies as part of the Operational Accounting & Reporting department within Markel's accounting and finance group (A&F). OAR is responsible for the controls and processes around reporting Markel's division and segment results.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform journal entries and complex account reconciliations including identification and remediation of all issues in compliance with audit requirements.

  • Participate in the monthly, quarterly, and annual general ledger closing and reporting processes, including preparation of division and segment pack schedules to be presented to A&F leadership.

  • Perform the accurate and timely recording of loss reserve data into ledger and the analysis of loss ratio results.

  • Assist with the preparation of income statement and balance sheet packages and related comprehensive analysis for variances and trends.

  • Complete intercompany wire settlements and balancing of intercompany accounts.

  • Participate in the internal and external audit process.

  • Work closely with other functional areas (i.e., corporate accounting & reporting, statutory reporting, business support, disbursements, treasury, actuarial and reinsurance) to resolve issues and support achievement of business goals.

  • Assist with the preparation of insurance company financial statements and ensure compliance with statutory guidance and regulatory deadlines.

  • Collaborate with teammates and initiate ideas with management to identify, design, and implement process improvements for greater efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Participate in other strategic accounting and business projects as they arise.

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; accounting graduate degree preferred.

  • One to three years of accounting experience preferred.

  • Insurance accounting experience preferred, both GAAP and Statutory.

  • Strong computer skills including a high degree of proficiency within Excel. Experience with Lawson and

  • Hyperion applications preferred.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills.

  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills.

  • High degree of flexibility and responsiveness to change.

  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines and limited supervision.

Accounting Manager PromiseShip is currently seeking an Accounting Manager to be responsible for the accurate reporting of the organization's financial position, review and analyze the revenue, expense, asset and liability accounts and reconcile discrepancies. This position also prepares financial reports and statements for management's use, provides recommendations on financial decisions and develops and maintains annual operating budget. RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES 1. Monitors, audits, and reviews revenue, expense, assets and liability accounts of the corporation. 2. Coordinates a monthly reconciliation review process by examining a variety of accounting documents, identifying unusual activity, and recommending changes when necessary. 3. Participates in the administration and monitoring of all NFC financial activities (e.g., budgeting, budget analysis, invoices, purchasing, and disbursement). 4. Supervises all business office functions related to Accounts Receivable billings. 5. Supervises accounting and billing staff. 6. Assists with the development and implementation of comprehensive financial plan with long- and short-term objectives. 7. Audits reporting activities for compliance with government regulations. 8. Prepares financial reports and statements, including but not limited to basic financial statements, analysis and written reports, charts, statistical data and surveys. 9. Prepares and submits year-end summaries of accounts and analysis of assets (e.g. asset, liability, revenue, expenses). 10. Developing and preparing reports for management follow up on financial issues as needed. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1. A Bachelor's degree in Accounting and one to two year's progressive experience in a management level position. 2. Experience in fiscal planning, and budgetary analysis. 3. Combination of non-profit accounting and private industry experience is highly preferred. 4. CPA designation a plus. 5. Thorough knowledge of general accounting including thorough skills knowledge plus the application of general accounting theory. 6. Must be proficient in MS word, Excel, and Power Point software programs as well as mainframe systems. 7. Exceptional analytical and problem solving abilities.
